Does stacking speakers cause damage to the bottom speaker??

Hi guys,

I always go on the Sansui forum but rarely the speaker forum, BUT..., I do have a speaker question I'd like to ask you speaker guys. I'm sure this has been asked before but I have never seen it.

Question:
Does stacking speakers, one on top of the other, damage the speaker cabinet on the bottom of the stack??? The speaker on the bottom is heavy and substantial in construction and weight (Sansui SP-2000 - 1970) and the speaker on the top is a 'heavy smaller speaker' . (Sansui AS-100 - 1970). Could this stacking 'damage' the speaker on the bottom???? I do have the bottom speaker on a very stable speaker stand about 5 inches in height.

I really don't want to damage the bottom speaker or the sound of the speakers. :scratch2:

Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear that. I am/was just worried about the 'structural integrety' of the lower speaker cabinet. I sure don't want to damage the lower speaker cabinets cause I do like the speakers so much. I got em stacked right not, stacked them yesterday, and it looks good, and the smaller speakers sound better by raising them much higher! The top speakers are heavy speakers but the bottom ones are very heavy as well.

No, but if your intention is to play them simultaneously, the sound WILL suffer.

There are hundreds of threads in the Speaker Forum on stacking. Use "Search this Forum" to find them. "Axiomatic" as keyword will find some of what I have posted about the practice. Here's a teaser:

I do not play them at the same time. I will check out others comments in the archive.

Just one question: Can the weight of the top speaker, seeing it's a heavy one, over time, weaken or break down the strength of the lower speaker cabinet. That's really all I am worried about. :scratch2:

Just don't want to damage the lower cabinet speaker enclosure.

Hey Bluesky,
Buy some thin, neoprene washers at any hardware store, I use 4, 1 1/2 inch diameter washers per speaker stack.
These may be placed in between the stacked speakers. they do not leave any residue and are almost invisible. Most of all, they are cheap!
I'm sure that once in a while you play both pair! 'fess up!
 
That goes to the construction and quality of materials used.

Generally speaking, it's not an issue.

I am not familiar with your speakers. You'll have to make that assessment.

Would I stack HPM-100s on Radio Shack Presidians?

Four under each, maybe.... :tongue:

I just wanted to check with you all cause I really like my bottom speakers and don't want to mess them up. They are really heavy, very solid, and do appear to have strong cabinets so I agree there should be no problem. I was just wondering because my smaller top speakers are quite heavy tooooo. The neoprene washers sound like a great idea! I'd hate to mess up the finish on the top of the bottom cabinets.

I am going to get some speaker stands for the smaller speakers. The smaller (approx 23 inches high) AS-100s really sound so much better when raised. The difference in sound is remarkable by just raising them. I saw some perfect 'Sansui' stands, that I would love to have, for sale in Japan only, on Yahoo Japan but they don't sell internationally. Someone got them for like $50. I would of paid $150 no problem. (for my $9.98 speakers!! LOL)

I've got about a 120 lb speaker sitting on top of an even bigger speaker.. No issues.. carry on and just enjoy.. If nothing else, it should help deaden the lower speaker cab with the added weight and compression.
