Don't Laugh At Me, But...I dragged this home today!

Hey! That was my first stereo system that I bought with own money(mowing lawns and such). It was sometime around 1973 I think. That's unbelievable that one of those things survived all these years. Too cool!

Wow. Thats a great piece of Equipment. JC Pennys items were sometimes made by Sanyo and Fisher. The UL rating number can be used to look up the product and manufacturer. I am interested in crap like that. I have been looking for a Curtis Mathis set that my grandfather had. The Tube amp in that piece of living room furniture was huge. It had an 8-track tape player and I must have played Elvis Presley's live concert Moody Blues tape a thousands times. I was sitting in front of it watching TV when it came across that Elvis had died. I always wanted one of those as I got older.

Here's one just like it that auction site we all go to!! Go to 8-track under Vintage and type in JC Penney. I have the url but didn't know if I would get in trouble posting it here. Anywya, it's like the only one there. He wants a BIN of $90 which is hilarious. Think my $6.95 was a better deal. I didn't get speakers but what the heck.

Regarding who made it, there is no UL number from mine. It just says "Model 1202"

I looked on the bottom also, just a sticker warning you not to service it yourself! BTW, this thing is way heavier than you would think it would be. Quite the little paperweight for its size!! Deceiving that way. Maybe that means they used good stuff in it!!

My Dad still has his 8 Track hooked up. Although he's never used it for years. He also has a stack of 8 tracks collecting dust somewhere.

So don't laugh. It was worth the $6.95!!! :)

Yeah, those old cheap stereos are kinda fun. I have had quite a few similar units just for the novelty in my past. Probably the best, though was a Radio Shack Realistic 8-track component with Dolby noise reduction. I used it to make 8-track copies of my Pere Ubu, Can and Faust CDs, although I did have Hawkwind's debut as a pre-recorded UK import 8-track. I paid $2.50 for that machine at a thrift store and sold it with all my tapes to a co-worker who really wanted an 8-track player. He asked how much I wanted for the lot and I told him make me an offer. I figured he would offer me $10 at the most for all of it since I figured that was all it was worth. He ended up giving me $35 for all of it and insisted it was worth that. He did periodically tell me how much enjoyment he was getting out of it which eventually helped me get over the guilt for the $32.50 profit (okay, maybe the profit was a little less since I sold him the tapes as well, but he hardily seemed the type to listen to Can or Faust).

That is a cool find! I found a nice JC Penny all in one with 8 track, cassette, and AM/FM recently. Very similar in looks to the Soundesign, Retrokeeper posted. It does bring back a lot of nostalgia when listening to those old cartridges! It amazes me that this 40 year old vintage technology is still working! :music:
To me it's fun to keep this first serious attempt at having portable recorded music going. I also feel like we are all helping to preserve history in a small way by keeping this older gear working.
