Greetings from Australia to all at AK.
I just wanted to drop you all a line and tell you that your fame and reputation, and that of your contributors, has reached that little piece of England down under known as Adelaide, South Australia.
I wanted to tell you that we have a dedicated core of Duel fans here in this small burg and we very much appreciate the literature and advice coming from experts such as yourself. We also envy the American trade-in schemes and parts availability when weighing up the financial options of furnishing our children with these sturdy decks to introduce them to the pleasures of the vinyl their parents are so eager to keep them away from as tots...
I have built more than a dozen plinths for these unique machines for my many nieces and nephews and other vinyl novices. The time has now come for my two children, who are on the threshold of teenage years (I'm a late starter...), to be given their first "real" Hi-Fi system and there was never any doubt that the plattenspeiler would be a trusty 'German helmet'!
We call them German helmets because that is what our Bulgarian boffin named Boris calls them. Boris grew up in rural Bulgaria and, due to their abundance in most of the surrounding fields, German helmets came to signify that which could not be destroyed. We are lucky to have him, since he grew up in the Eastern bloc and was taught by the best in adapting and repairing discarded western consumables. I am sure he would fit in well at this forum which seems to embrace durability and sustainability.
I just want to show you that they are still out there.... Forget a pimped up, chromed unit with an ivory plinth! Most of us would just like to find a NOS number ready to play and that I did just recently! Totally unused, never plugged in, virginal in all it's glory and ready to delight my great, grandchildren in a century to come... (late starts is also a generational thing in my clan)
Please see the attached photos. I realise that it's "only" a 1010F, but to find an original cartridge (sans stylus) AND the long, multi-play spindle in it's own box as well was astounding. Much humour and mirth was had by all at the auction house to see a middle aged man pumping the air and dancing a jig of delight when the hammer fell after two bids at $25.00 AU (about $20.00 US).
A few lame jokes from the auctioneer made it onto the webcast and I am happy that it was just the sound, rather than the vision. Thankfully the auction description was pretty vague describing it as "in box" without stipulating "original box" and there was only one photo on-line - from above and at the deck.
Enjoy the photos and tell the faithful that they are still out there - and even if they;'re not, they can get the next best thing at many flea market. That's a great line and perfect for your plattenspieler speil or your platter chatter - you got it from me!
