Dual 1009 loose counterweight

Hi,
I have a Dual 1009 that seems to have a counterweight issue. I cant get the tone arm to be level with the platter- rotating the weight in either direction seems to make no difference at all.

The tone arm is stuck, pointed up, tilted as far from the platter as it can get.

Does this mean the counterweight is broken? Or maybe it has slipped off the threads? I am not very familiar with the turntable-am I doing this incorrectly?

Any suggestions? Id really appreciate any help!

There is a nut on the right side right in front of the weight. Loosen it and move the shaft some and try again. Keep moving it in lil by lil till you get the arm balanced.

For what it's worth, I had the same problem on my 1009. This was last year, before I had any experience at all with Duals. I was pretty puzzled by what might be going on inside there (and still don't know- are there threads on the rubber that are stripped?). At any rate, I just used Amcrebelfan's method and got things balanced nicely. It's a neat turntable, although I don't have a definitive answer about what having no antiskate will do to the vinyl long-term (will it wear one side of the groove more?). Enjoy your 1009!
