Dual 1009 servicing

Greetings,

Your 1009 is one of the first. Have owned several. The Audio Technica cart mentioned above will work well on it. Also you could look at a vintage Shure M44 cart. They are discontinued. You can get a used one on EBay. Many don’t have a stylus. Often I buy them and get a new stylus. They sound great. My latest Dual is a 1019. Came with a M44. Surprisingly the stylus is good. Have the 1019 next to a Dual 1219 with a Shure M91ED. Much as I love that 1219 the 1019 actually sound a bit better. Good luck with the 1009.

Thanks for your advice, Eric!
I need to cut a new piece of perspex (acrylic?) for the rear side of the dust cover since it's missing.
Is the edge of the perspex, I mean the one fitting into the the groove on the plinth, is such an edge sharp or is it beveled?
Could you please post a pic if that does not cause too much trouble to you?
Thanks, Sir!

I use a Shure M 55E in my Dual 1019. Agree highly with your thoughs about the Dual 1019 and it's performance and sonics.

Quick update: just bought on ebay Germany an original Dual 1009 sled with its original ceramic cart (30€ shipping included), both are exactly the same mounted on my 1009.
It will take a couple of weeks to get them.
Afterwards, I'll follow Penn42 instruction getting a new set of leads with the correct connectors and solder them to the sled.
I'll have 2 sleds: one will stay original; the other one I'll mod it to connect to modern MM carts. Also, I'll have an extra original ceramic cart to resell down the line.

I'll keep you updated ... meanwhile ... I might be posting some other request for your advice on this low budget Dual 1009 project :)

I got a Best sled for my 1019. Still dropping channels. Tested the Best on my 1010S. Both channels are working. The 1019 sounds great when it’s working. Making me crazy! Mechanically it’s fine. Need to clean the contacts on the arm. This AM had right channel only. Cleaned contacts. Now I have both for a minute now left only. Had to go to work. Try again tonight.

Sometimes the jacks oxidize underneath.

I like that you are staying with the original sleds but know there is no shame in using reproduction ones. The idea is to keep these things running. Old duals are really special.
Indeed! I can only agree, sir! It's just that the original sled from Germany was cheaper than the reproduction one, with its original cart (whereas the reproduction comes without) and without international duties since I live in Italy :-)

Cold solder joint on lower switch. Played well after finding it. I knew it wasn’t the BEST sled. They always work and it did on my 1010S. As much as love my 1219s the 1019 beats them a little.E46C36F0-F275-4A5D-A370-E4562DE23AC5.jpeg

Great news and great plinth! I alternate between the 1229 and 1019 and love them both. It's really amazing to me how well both work being auto changers. I put the 45 stacker on and ran 45s yesterday just for fun. Such wonderful playthings.

Here I am ... these little tiny sled wires have just made it home ... it really took a loooong time ...

I'll keep you updated about soldering them on the new sled

Greetings, i just picked up a 1009. I have an AT-VM95C fitted. I tried an ortofon red but could not get it dialed in. It tracked very poorly on my rig. Just wondering what cartridges you have tried on yours since this post is older. Any favorites?

Using Shure M55 carts on all 1000 series Duals. Includes a 1010S,1009 SK, and a 1019. Have used this cart since age 16 (1967). Have multiple turntables on 2 systems. A lot of my serious listening is done on the 1009 and the 1919. Loads of detail in the sound. Play all sorts of music. jazz, rock and classical.
