Disclaimer- Know hardly anything about turntables beyond I was a kid, i put records on them, they played the records.

I picked up a Dual 1009 at a consignment shop (sounds way too nice for what the place is like) for $20. It has the dust cover, no cartridge, but the cartridge holder is there, wood base is in good shape.

I am willing to learn to service/restore it or take it to a local record shop to be serviced if it is worth it. By worth it, I mean for the $20 +restoring will I end up with a good turntable or are there much better options for the same amount of money?

Depending on how much you want to pay, anything can be restored/refurbed. cleaned and lubed, etc. The 1009 is not a bad table!

Where are you located, someone may be close to you to help.
 
I think the Dual 10xx and 12xx series turntables are great, but it all depends on what you're looking for. There are plenty of threads here on servicing Duals, so if you're mechanically inclined I would give it a shot. There are lots of options for the cartridge, too. I don't know what the 1009 sells for on average, but I would think serviced, with a cartridge, dustcover in good shape, etc., you'd be in the ~$150 range. On the other hand, you may be able to sell/trade your 1009 for something that is already up and running and ready to go, if you're looking for something that is more plug and play!
 
The 1009 was my 1st TT, way back in the 60s. I have a special fondness for the 10XX series, they were solid, reasonably precise, simple in both style and operation. Have fun with it!

I think I should be able to do the work with some reading and patience and I like tinkering. I just don't want to use up good time and money on something that will sound cruddy. If it has potential to be a nice sounding table I am inclined to do it since I find it to be a pretty nice looking piece.
 
You aren't Jim in CT from SOL are you?

Not sure what SOL is, so I assume I'm not that Jim.

However, with all the sources available from AK you should be able to get this up and running. In the last couple months I sold a couple 212's on the NH CL, but I rarely work on Duals!
 
There is an AK member NoTransistors who did a brilliant job on my 1009. I'm in Pittsburgh so you are much closer to him than I am. He is in Brooklyn so I suspect you are under two hours away.
 
It sounds much better than I expected. It competes with my JVC DD and blows away many "better" tables. I was skeptical of the 10" platter, but it was the table that came in my Scott console and I wanted to restore it. I felt hesitant about spending the money on it but am now very glad that I did.
