Dual 1019 lubrication kit

pamfletty

Active Member
Hello,

This weekend I got a Dual 1019. I plan on using this only for playing 78 rpm records. It will need a good cleaning and lubrication though. The idler wheel is also making a hell of a noise (like pictured here: (not my video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEJCRDWr1yA, and sometimes doesn't reach the pulley (maybe a spring problem?).

Anyways, I've got some work to do. Does anyone know where I can get a dedicated 1019 lubrication kit?

I've found a 'Dual dedicated' synthetic oil (http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/230539445360?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649), but I doubt that this is all I need for a full lubrication?

Any input is appreciated :tresbon:

The service manual, available for free on vinylengine.org, has the lubrication instructions on page 15. It includes what products to use.
The website dual-reference.com has a cross-reference table that lists currently available replacement lubes.

If memory serves there is an error in this list. On the motor you shounldn't use 10W30 as they say, it is too thick. Use thin sewing machine oil, and don't forget to clean the bearings (including a good bath for the lower bearing's felt ring - don't dismantle the upper bearing!) with isopropyl alcohol to throughly remove all the original PDP40 of Clavus 17 is not miscible, the mixture would act like goo, not as a lubricant. This information comes from Dual service.

You may want to have a look at the Servicing Dual Continuous Pole Motors and Drive Systems guide on Vinylengine. It also covers other topics like the idler wheel and the main bearing, and conforms to the procedure as it was performed at Dual themselves.

Allright, it looks like I will need following oils/lubricants:

- "light, non-detergent and non-gumming machine oil such as the oil used in sewing machines"
- Automotive Synthetic Motor Oil 10W-30W
- White Lithium Based Grease with the consistency of Vaseline
- Silicone Oil 500,000 Weight

The search begins :scratch2:

Thanx for the input guys!

If anyone knows off a 'ready to go' lubrication kit, please let me know.

I just went through the following process with the same exact turntable, and I can say all the above advise is very sound.

For the motor, follow this guide here: http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=65030

You could follow the service manual but the step-by-step photos really help out!

Also, I used 300,000 weight silicone oil for the tonearm dampening and I'm really happy with it. During my research, I came across a couple of opinions that felt 500,000 just wasn't the right consistency.

If you have any questions during your restoration, pm me and I will try to answer anything!

Thanx for the offer! I will follow that manual. Unfortunately, I also noticed that only one channel is really working, the other very very softly has some output. I wanted to check with another cartridge if it is cartridge or turntable related, but I didn't have the right headshell screws for the other cartridge. Ordered some to check it out. I have a feeling it might be the cartridge or stylus (Shure M75 MG with a rs-6e stylus), as the stylus looks a bit crooked and there was no VTA adjustment spacer in place.

This looks like it's gonna be a fun (and hopefully not a stressfull) project.

So, I still have to get the right lubricants and oils, but I did clean the idler wheel, and the motorpulley. I used warm water with a little bit of soap for the idler wheel, and the pulley I cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.

I cleaned the inside of the platter rim also with isopropyl alcohol. This seems to have done nothing to solve the idler wheel grip problem and there's still all kinds of noises.

I think I can distinguish 3 different noises: one from the pulley on its own, one from the idler wheel/pulley rotation, and one higher pitched buzzing that I don't know the origin from.

Like I said, I still have to service the motor and whatnot, but does anyone know if these noises are a typical "turntable has been sitting in a closet for years and just needs lubricating"-noises, or are they a sympton of something else?

I made some videos to try to show what i'm saying here:

Video 1 is before I cleaned the idler wheel, pulley and platter.
The other 2 are after cleaning.

Don't people boil the idler wheel in water to soften them back up or some use DOT 3 brake fluid on idler wheel to soften hard rubber to restore grip?
