Dual 1019 - rewire arm?

Hello,

I have my dual 1019 in the shop for adjustments, and I happen to have a set of 4x32 awg cardas tonearm wire sitting around the house. I'm pretty sure the wire in the am is original. Forgive my ignorance, but would this wire be appropriate for use with this arm, and if so, should I have my arm rewired? Would it be an improvement?

Dual 1019 has 1 wire(signal)/1 screen(neutral) for each channel. Are cardas wires screened(shielded)? I don't think the game worth the candle.

Take a 1019 with stock wiring and a 1019 with Cardas wire and make all other things (cartridge, etc) equal. In a double blind test (the gold standard), I would find it highly unlikely that anyone could consistently select one wire over another. Now that's not to say that you might think it sounded better with the Cardas. But that would be a psychological bias effect on your part and not anything having to do with the actual quality of the signal.

I've seen about 1 out of 10 1019's with bad tonearm wires. Here are the high failure items besides the normal cleaning and adjustments:

1. Removable headshell, The contact strips in the top need to be cleaned and fixed into place with epoxy. The 4 leads to the cart need to be replaced. The wires are flimsy and the actual connectors are a 3 sided square (to fit euro carts of the time). Needs new wires and round connectors. This single repair is the most important on a 1019.
2. Muting switch. Two styles. Later ones went with the style found in the 12XX series - that's the one you want.

What most miss are the vertical tonearm bearings. They need to be disassembled and cleaned, Originally packed with grease, now frozen. Special tools required - not something to learn on. Same is true on the other 10XX models, as well as the 1209, 1214, 1215, 1215-S and 1216.

My two cents

Listen to Bohley. Have had Duals on and off since high school. Never had an issue with tonearm wires. The headshell wires thats something else. They have metal contacts come loose with age. Forty plus years. As Bill said, the wires are flimsy and the cartridge clips are three sided. You will drop a channel. Bill redid a headshell for me rewired it, eboxied the contacts and replaced the clips. That headshell works perfect. Dont mess with the wires on the arm.

All three Duals I have have the orginal wires in them. My oldest is a 1009. No cue or antiskate. May be my best sounding table. Have a 1015 and a 1229 with no issues.

Umm...Can't agree...sort of a yes and no

TRUE..the tonearm wires rarely go bad but

1) Headshells sleds do
2) Grounding is often an issue - HUMMMMMM
3) You could have a great sled and back plate but if you change carts all bets are off...

See my thread here from today...ALOT cheaper than Cardas and guarenteed to work better than the sled/contacts/backplates

Oh, and as to sound, sonically, better wires are not only discernable, they are measurable...
