Dual 1019 with Shure M31E

My sister wanted to buy me an old turntable for Christmas so I sent her a link to decent looking Dual 1019 on eBay. She had the winning bid. The listing says
"It has a Shure M31E with original stylus. They are in nice condition and play well."
Is this a good turntable/cartridge combo, or should I try to replace the cartridge? What's the likelihood that the stylus is original, will sound good, and be in good condition?

Did you take delivery of the TT yet? If not, you better hope the seller packs the deck correctly. That's a 7-pound platter and it'll smash everything if it's free to circulate in the box.
You're probably gonna need a new stylus if the old one hasn't been replaced yet. That's where the fun begins.
Easy to find replacement styli but they aren't all of equal quality. Stick with JICO. LP Tunes is JICO's official US distributor.
It's an excellent turntable, very well built. I have a 1019, working but currently not in service. The cart is a good match for the arm.

I sent her messages, even photos of damaged turntables I have received. My sister also told her to pack it well. We'll see how good of a job she does.
I won't get to listen to it until I get down there in November.

As Oldude said, hope it’s packed well. Turntables are hard to ship. My last 1219 in 3 boxes. I separated the platter and the counter weight on the arm. Dust cover by itself. Base by itself. It’s expensive. The 1019 was one of Duals best. Used to have have M31 on my 1010S. Like all Shures it’s a good cart. Matches well with the 1019. Have Jicos on several 1219s. You don’t necessarily need to buy the Jico SAS. I have $35 ones. They are fine. Tuned up the 1019 will run a long time.

Good luck this time. Hope the head shell and cart I sent you are working. You could try the Grado black on the 1019.

For a Dual 1019 packing well means removing the heavy platter, the tonearm weight, the cartridge sled, wrapping each of these separately and the dust cover if one is available.Securing the tonearm and using the transit screws. And of course, packing the whole kit & caboodle well and the platter at the bottom so it can't hit anything. Many moons ago I bought a Dual 1019 that was "securily packed" by the seller. He wrapped the whole thing in plastic wrap and that was it. That heavy platter swinging around for a couple thousand miles ride was a very effective wrecking ball. I received a bucket of small parts in the box.

There are captive screws to clamp the entire turntable to the plinth. The platter itself is held to the turntable shaft by a wire clip. These turntables were originally supplied with several small nylon wedges that could be jammed under the platter. Those would be good if you're moving the turntable across the room, but not for shipping.
 
I'm not sure what type of music the OP likes, but this is a great cart for classic and progressive rock. It's a very lively, high output cartridge with a lot of bass punch. It came in many flavors, Shure M31E and M32E, Pacific M73PE, Realistic RS120E and RS220E. Internally, all are the same (and as mentioned, also the same, internally, as the Shure M55E and M44E). The only differences are the color of the plastic body, the labeling on the front and the original stylus.

The M31E and Realistic RS220E originally came with the N31E stylus, a 0.2 x 0.7 mil elliptical with a yellow grip and a recommended VTF range of 1 - 2g. Of course, this stylus fits the other compatible models and effectively turns them into an M31E. Here's my M32E with a NOS N31E stylus:

The M32E, RS120E and Pacific M73PE (yellow body shown above) originally came with the N32E styls, a 0.2 x 0.7 mil elliptical with a brown grip and a recommended tracking force of 2 - 4g. The only N32E stylus I have was the original stylus that came with the M32E cartridge shown above. The cantilever is bent into the shape of a pretzel. So, I've only run mine with the lighter N31E stylus - which is a good match for my MCS 6700 (Technics SL-1950) with an S-shaped tonearm that is on the light side of medium weight.

In any case, I would suspect an M31E, with a NOS N31E stylus would be a great match for that Dual 1019, and a lot of fun. I really enjoy mine. I'm currently running a pair of KEF LS50s, which aren't known for their deep bass, and some people find them a bit bright. The M31E/M32E/M73PE, with a lot of bass punch and the typical Shure warm house sound seems to mate very well with the LS50 speakers.

I second the recommendation for picking up a genuine Shure NOS N31E stylus from Gary at The Voice of Music for 27 bucks. It's a true bargain for a genuine, Made in the US, NOS Shure stylus. Gary used to have both the N31E and N32E in stock, but sold out of the N32E a while back. You can find the N32E on eBay, but the prices are higher. About a month and a half ago, I purchased three of the NOS N31E from Gary and since then he has raised his price by 5 bucks (still a great bargain), which indicates to me his remaining stock is running low. So, get them while you can. I currently have three of these carts (in various flavors) and five NOS N31E styli. So, I'm set. They are a true bargain in a vintage Shure cartridge/stylus that I highly recommend. There are certainly more refined cartridge/stylus combinations available, but in terms of fun for the money, these are tough to beat.
