Dual 1209 Anti Skate

More a comment than question-
I have two 1209 turntables, both serviced and work well. The anti skate on both never fully zero out; if I balance the tone arm to float at record height and set the anti skate to zero, the arm will move outward from the lead out position to about the middle of the record. From the mid point to the outer edge there is no anti skate evident. If I set the AS to .5 gram, the arm will move completely from lead out to the outer edge of record.
When I use a test record the anti skate setting seems to track tracking force with a conical stylus, but requires about half the AS setting with an elliptical. Normal for a spring anti skate system?

On my 1229Q the AS is all out of wack. Last time I was inside I noticed the plastic cam that holds the spring was cracked. The settings on the dial are almost inverse of how the tonearm appears to behave.

I have been using the blank disc method to get close to where I feel the AS should be set.

The as numbers on my 1219 are for a 6 mil conical and a 2x9 mil elliptical. Neither are common sizes today. Shure addresses this in the manual and details how to compensate. If you want to...

I usually run less than prescribed. Half maybe? Set by ear and eye is the best method on these i find.

I also watch for heavy deflection of the cantilever. And if your wheel is cracked, all bets are off.

Familiar with the cracked cam; both tables have replacements. Good info on the Shure, installing a M91ED soon!
