Dual 1219 questions

I'm picking up a Dual 1219 turntable tomorrow and I was hoping someone could tell me the best way to pack this for a safe journey home. I know how to secure the transport screws on top of the plinth, but what about the platter? Does it come off easily? Should I remove it or put shims underneath?

Also, will the plastic head shell piece for the Dual 701, 721, 704 etc work for this machine? I believe the 1219 is missing that part.

Not sure about head shell. The platter comes off after removing a ring lock, not sure that is correct name. Small screw driver will remove. Most of mine are missing it, not needed to operate.

Tighten up on chassis screws. Sometimes the center trim ring removes easily from mat. This makes it easier to not marr it when removing the platter retaining clip.
Remove counterweight with its chrome shaft still attached, by loosening the pretty retaining screw. Then retighten retaining screw. Be certain that machine is not in a cycle when you remove platter. If so, then rotate platter clockwise to complete cycle. Then with the start/stop lever centered [because the return cycle is complete], remove platter and put a piece of tape on lever, so that it is still centered when you replace platter. This keeps the idler from getting smashed by the platter when you reinstall it.
Before you go to bed tonight, go to www.vinylengine.com, and in their library you will find a downloadable owners manual on your new turntable. There is also a service manual. One of these will explain what I have just thrown at you, and should have a sketch of the platter clip.

Same headshell as 1229, 1249, 701, etc...

If you are a purist and want to restore this 1219 to the way that it was when it left the factory, then only the 1219 or 1229 headshell will do. If it is snapped off, there is a good chance that the tonearm wires are damaged. Others work, but it's also a different look.
