Dual 1229 auto start issues but with a twist

Hi everyone. I've had a lot of personal things going on over the last 6 months or so and haven't had time to get on here. Had no idea about all of the updates and was really confused when I first logged on a few days ago haha. I've finally found the time to start working on some of my projects and have ran into a snag on a dual 1229 turntable that recently started giving me trouble and inspired me to organize my new work bench area and get to work.

So I purchased this when I first started working on vintage equipment and it was the first dual turntable I worked on. Since then I've probably cleaned, lubricated and restored around 20 or so duals. Unfortunately I wasn't as good then as I am now and although I cleaned all of the old grease off, I didn't relubricate much. This table has had very little use over the last 5 years or so with maybe 100 records being played.

Around a year ago the auto start function stopped working so I took it down and put it on the shelf until today when I decided to try to get it up and running properly. I've cleaned and lubricated everything that needed it and the auto start function was still not working properly. I then replaced the stuerpimple and it worked, or so I thought! I had switch the the tonearm from.single to multi at some.point in my cleaning and when moved it back to single the same symptoms of the tonearm lifting but not moving from the tonearm rest. Is there anything you guys can think of that may cause the auto start to not work in single mode but still work properly when switched to multi?

Kinda sounds like your lifter/cuing arm is out of adjustment.

Procedure to adjust is laid out in the shop manual.
 
That's what I was thinking too, I fiddled with it but no luck. It does lift the arm up and auto return in both modes with no issues if that makes any difference. You adjust the lifter with that cog like wheel on it, right?
 
Ok so I adjusted the lifter and cueing arm using both the cog on the lift itself and the screw near the antiskate wheel. It's definitely lifting high enough and adjusted properly. Everything is working right with the multiplayer lifter engaged but not when it's switched back to single
 
The issue may be related to the deering ring support washer. It is a black rubbed o ring that holds the tone arm in its proper position when engaging multi or single play. If it has failed it may cause the symptoms described. If it has never been replaced it will need to be. Be careful not to lose the ball bearings. There are two.
 
That was one of the first things I replaced on this unit. And it's been lubricated and works as it should. I can easily change from multi to single smoothly
 
Is the automatic movement paddle that contacts the pimple clean and free of any lubricant. Give it a clean with ipa and test.
