Dual 1229 Plinth (or how to make sawdust)

Congratulations Mel, that is one damn fine looking plinth. It will be ogled :para: and oohed over for years to come. A piece anyone would be proud to display.:smoke:

Now, about new plinths for my TD150 & TD166.:D

Haven't tried a Thorens yet, PM me we will talk! although if I start on all your TTs I will never need a job again! :D

I love beautiful wood and that turned out nicely. :) I was wondering about the Johnsons paste wax...are we talking the basic car wax or do they make a furniture wax or...? I love oil finishes myself but haven't ever waxed over them....are you getting extra water resistance and depth without shininess or...? I'd love to hear a little more about the finish.

I started with a 1:1 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, slathered on the wood liberally, let it soak for a half hour to an hour, then remove the excess, hand rub until no more of the oil comes off on your rag, dispose of the rag properly (this is very important as the rag can become combustible as it dries), once the wood will no longer accept oil we start to apply the paste wax in thin coats until you are happy with the shine and depth of build. As for the wax, you can buy fancy wood workers wax at specialty stores, but I have always been a fan of the Johnson’s, you can find it in your local hardware store with the floor products, it has been around for at least a hundred years so they must be doing something right! :thmbsp:

I gotta try this

I've got an old KLH model 38 ( I think. . ) and it has a dual TT (1214). this would be a nice project to bring it into the light and into daily use (it's currently hiberating).

I've got a big chunk of Ikea butcher block that I want to section, then sammich together for a (mostly) solid plinth .. . it would be DENSE - maybe weigh about 10 or 20 pounds . . . :D

AMAZING craftsmanship Divotdog

Sounds like a great Idea Markus, I have an old ARXA that has been on the back burner for at least a year, I was considering a stacked MDF plinth just for the mass, perhaps a little Walnut veneer just to dress it up. :scratch2:

yup . .if the butcher block didn't look so cool, I'd try my hand at veneering it . . just snagged 5 different veneers from Rocklar's in Danvers MA - cherry, mahogany, a three exotics I can't pronounce :D never tried my hand at veneer, so I'm going to start small with a tube amp base for one of my magnavoxes . . I grabbed enough of Uma Suma (or something like that) to veneer a pair of homemade bookshelf speakers . . . REALLY pretty grain on that stuff . .

thanks for the step by step on the linseed oil finish - always wondered how best to do that - and paste wax ROCKS  I use that when I really want to bring out the grain in something.

I am sitting here mouth agape shaking my head. Mel, that is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship. If you are seriously considering taking orders I would be honored to be added to the list. Seth did a beautiful job refurbishing my 1229 and I can think of no better way to display it than in a plinth like that.

If I may, sir, well done!!

Final?

Was there ever a photo posted of this beautiful plinth with the TT in it? Cover?
Reading this was like a tease with no happy ending!

I haven't got to the making sawdust step yet, hopefully this weekend. I'm surprised no offers these for sale.

Here's mine on some old green bar paper.

Thanks guys, Wow, I haven't seen this in a day or two :D I don't know if Joe ever posted a pic of the plinth with the TT mounted or not.

Damn!!! You did a marvelous job on the plinth. I'm curious if you did any more plinths. Seems to me there were several waiting in line to have one made. We need to have Joe post some pics of his turntable. If you read this Joe, we need some pics, please.

Great Job, Mel! You are definitely the "Dual Plinth King" around here! :thmbsp: Your probably going to get flooded with orders. :D

Thanks again guys, but don't start sending in orders, I mostly do Thorens now and not very many of them as they are rather time consuming!

That's my main table right after I finished it, it is a sand filled plinth in quilted maple. Here is the build thread. :thmbsp:

Stay tuned, there is a lot more to come, my goal here is to build a real giant killer out of this TT. :thmbsp:

This is where you left off. Curious to know what you have done since the last thread. That is one gorgeous turntable. :music:
