Dual 1229 Thrift Find

Your choice of materials is wide open as far as looks and density. The important thing is the turntable "drops" into cutouts and is supported by the springs. The four wooden blocks that serve as feet can be improved upon for isolation.
 
WD40 is probably not the best thing to free up the old grease, because the WD40 will tend to harden over time. Better to use alcohol to remove the old (excess will evaporate) and then to replace with a modern lubricant.
 
I say for $6, have some fun with it!

Eff around with it and try and bring it back to life.

All AKer’s love this kind of story and think how cool it would be if you can post that success story.

If you do decide to attempt a restore I cannot recommend enough building the repair stand. Instructions for one can be found on the vinyl engine 1219 page. Being able to access the top and bottom at the same time is key and makes things so much easier. Also, be careful because the brushed aluminum faceplate scratches if you look at it wrong.

Definitely print out the service manual, and have pdf's like the one linked up thread and/or mrow2's (on vinyl engine) available for reference. It's a doable project, though getting them just right can take a little trial and error if you don't know what to look for. I learn some new fine tuning every unit I tackle.
 
There's a guy on YouTube that did a restoration on one of these Dual TT. I followed it exactly it it came out great.
I think it was this one.
 
As noted above the idler wheel that connects the motor to platter pivots. If frozen it won’t run. Would look there first. The pivot is held together with a c clip. Remove clean with alcohol and oil. Also look to see if the speed selector works. Dry grease can cause that. Start there. I would keep it. Had a broken base that I reglued.

Total overhaul,my ass.. He never indexed the pitch control and several other things were not done. I would not let him touch my Dual,to rough with it and everything was half assed.

I think I saw that video once. Is he the joker who uses a hammer to separate the motor housings and who throws it around the table in its plinth? If it is, this guy is ham fisted and careless.

Can't see the video information, but you MUST be referring to 12VoltVids on youtube. He's super rough wit customer stuff, he hulk-hands everything, and also never cleans his solder connections.
 
Thank you to all who have chimed in so far. I moved the table to my home office where it will wait for me to have some free time. I looked at the underside briefly and I can see that restoring it will be an exercise in attention to detail and patience. Lots of great advice here that will help no doubt! I am currently knee deep in two college courses, I'm a bit of a late bloomer in that regard, so my free time is at a premium.
