Dual 1229Q Tonearm Falls Back to Rest When Using Que Lever

Hello everyone, I have a dual 1229Q that has been in my family since it was brand new! The table has been fully serviced and absolutely everything works! A couple days ago I found a problem thats very annoying. When listening to a record, If I want to skip a song I would push the que lever and then move the tonearm and then drop the needle. What I have discovered is that knowmatter where I am in the record when I push the tonearm lever up, the Tonearm then starts to fall all the way over till its almost at the tonearm rest. I'm not sure why it does this. I know that the tonearm is balanced and the counterweight is all good. I think it has something to do with something on the bottom of the turntable. Please let me know what would cause this issue and how to fix it. I have attached two pictures, one is showing the tonearm floating and the one after shows where the tonearm falls to. Thanks,
Ben

I'd set the anti skate to zero, then report back.
Hi, I cleaned the metal part that the stuerpimple runs against and now when the que lever is up the que lever works perfectly! But as soon as i put the que lever down the arm starts to do the same thing again. Any ideas?

Thanks, a crystal-clear explanation, despite the immense complication!
Thank you! I have another question, I ordered an EVG stylus for my Shure V15 Type 3. The model number is PM3145D, how good is this stylus? When my original supertrackplus stylus wore out, I got the pflshtanti one which was AWFUL!! The needle would bottom out constantly even if I had the counterweight as light as possible and tracking force. It also sound like crap! I've read good reviews about the one I got and want to know what other people think of it.

I'd like to help but I know zip about it. There are true experts on AK, they seem to know every cartridge and every stylus ever made. If they don't see this thread and advise you, track them down — you'll find them on every thread with the word "stylus" in the title.

Sounds good I'll post another thread about the needle.

Duals don't care if they are level. Matter of fact when new in stores, they had the 1229 on a 45 degree angle display and it tracked just fine - a nice selling tool. To your initial problem - underneath the table, directly under where the tonearm mounts, there is a curved bracket. In the center of that curved part, there is a spring that clips from that bracket to the anti skating bracket (in addition to the anti skate spring itself). I'd bet that first spring is not attached. You need to be careful attaching it so that it doesn't grab the anti skating spring. Point 2 - the tonearm doesn't sound balanced to me.

I agree... fixed many Duals. Their tone arms are balanced in all planes if properly set. The tracking force is not gravity, once the arm is balanced the tracking force is applied by a clock spring arrangement... if the disc would remain on the platter they will play upside down. There are better tone arms for sure but Duals are quality and rather unique in their way.

Bohhey, let me first start out and say I'm a huge fan! without seeing your posts on these forums I would not have been able to rebuild my dual 1229Q. Could you attach a picture of the spring you're talking about? I think I know the spring the you're talking about but I just want to be sure. Thank you so much for your input!!

Is this the spring you are talking about? I found this image on google and circled the spring I believe you're refering to.

Hi,
Thank you so much for the advice! I'm really loving this forum, everyone is so nice and eager to help me solve any and all the audio related issues I'm having.

Yes sir! In the pic you provided, note the rubber collar is broken. Tonearm will not track correctly with this condition.

Sounds good! What would be wrong with my spring? Would it not be attached on one of the sides
Yours should liik like the pic - it is correct. I would say that the spring is detached or missing. When that happens, the anti skate pulls way too much - thus your problem.

Hi Bohhey, turns out that spring is there and is attached properly. The proplem ended up being that the counterweight was way to loose! I rebalanced the tonearm and now all is well! Thank you so much for your help!
