Dual 1229Q Tonearm Mass

Good evening everyone. I've searched the web, read the manual, read old reviews, looked on both Vinylengine and here and can't seem to find the answer to this one simple question:

What's the effective mass of the Dual 1229Q tonearm?

Thanks for your help.

Join the club. I tried to find the effective tonearm mass of my Dual 1229 from an official source. No luck.

Get me a gram scale, and I will give it a whirl. There was once a German website with oodles of stuff [literature, service specs, reviews, factory test results, etc.........] on all Dual models, many of which we have never seen. They had a factory paper on 1219/1229 arm resonance. Cool, but where did the website go?

Seth: Lulabu's archive? There you go: http://wegavision.pytalhost.com/

Anyway, Dual claimed an f(res) of 9.5 Hz for a cart with 25 cu and 5.5 g - if one calculates that back according to the usual formula, total effective mass would be ca. 11,2 g. That minus ca. 6 g for the cart plus screws and nuts would leave ca. 5.2 g for the effective mass of the arm.

Manfred!
I was wondering where that website disappeared.
Using Howard's post, all arms would give nearly the same reading.
Weighing the arm while it is suspended in its bearings is not the same as pulling it apart and then weighing it. Otherwise the 1219 and 1229Q would give the same effective mass readings.

Seth: Actually it didn't go anywhere. Sometimes it's unavailable, though - which as far as I'm aware has something to do with Lulabu using a free hoster. But these outages typically only last a day or two, until the archive is accessible again. And in the meantime you could always try one of the site snapshots on archive.org.

So, bringing this back from the dead.

I removed the cartridge, put an empty cartridge sled on the tonearm, removed the counterweight, got out my trusty Harbor Freight digital scale and the answer is...

11.5 grams

The cartridge sled was 2.2 grams and the tonearm by itself was 9.3 grams.

Hi,

Sorry but that won't tell you the effective mass. You can be sure it is lower.
I can't go for Lini's estimate of 5.2g either. IMO the carrier and headshell
will be near that, and at the end of the arm are the same as effective mass.

The counterweight if not effectively decoupled will also add to effective mass.

Just looking at it I'd say about 8g to 10g. YMMV.

sreten: I can't quite believe that this should be correct, either - but, as already mentioned above, it's what Dual claimed (compare there: http://dual.pytalhost.eu/1219p/1219-07.jpg). I made a bit of a mistake, though, 'cause I forgot that they've used a Dual click-mount cart variant - so no screws & nuts to be taken into consideration there. And then the weight of the cart will also not entirely go into the total effective mass - so that the effective arm mass should be more like roundabout 6.2 g, although that would still be quite a bit less than what I would have expected.
