DUAL 1237 COUNTER WEIGHT ?

I picked up a DUAL 1237 with ORTOFON 15 D $35 in Clearwater...Counter weight seems to be off 1257 it Weighs 96.8 grams will not balance it seems threads are no longer present either, are they plastic ? From what I have found 1237 should be 90 grams. I see 1237 TT for sale on ebay all the time yet I see many 1237 with same counter weight I have mostly Chrome vs Black ..Yet does not look like the two listed that are to be correct..They seem to look like 1257 CW ?..Is 242604 & 243511W ...Only correct ones ? W version is ? Thank you Rick

Rick: Dualfred(.de) still offers the 242604 (over here currently for 14.62 Euro including Corona-reduced (19 -> 16 %) VAT). And I'd assume, that Alfred would also know about the different variants of the 1237 - so it might be a good idea to contact and ask him.

Manfred, thank you. I will reach out to him. The 604 & 511 what is listed in service manual and at this point will probably get one of them. What I did not understand seeing so many Dual 1237 turntables for sale ebay etc with 1257 counterweight and 1257 was 6.8 grams more. My real knowledge of turntables is limited to belts and cartridges so any other issue is out of my zone.( Not sure + or - of counterweight tolerance ) I have B & O - 4002 had since 1992 ( another yard sale find $25 & $93 in repairs ) this 4002 is so over engineered, The TT squeals very loud on auto return and just getting top plates and side trim off difficult even worse trying to put it back together. Puzzle like. Not ready to drop a lot of $$ after my $30 diagnosis if not too much money, I will fix but if to crazy cost to fix it sell as is. Today playing vinyl on PL 15D Pioneer like Dual I bought due to Excellent cond. very clean and was only $70 took off generic cartridge and added old Stanton 680 EEE ..Going to listing somewhere soon. I am retired and bored so thinking when I can buy early 80's stereo equipment that need basic fix that I can do and make some money along the way I am good. In 1981 I bought my Pioneer amp. tuner, deck, eq, TT & later used 1979- RG-1.. Still using today....Speakers today Infinity RB 4b Refoamed 4 speakers & refinished oak wood ( Paid $150 - 2 months ago off original owner) Between Tampa, St Pete , Clearwater & South to Sarasota no shortage of vintage up for sale..The 1237 Dual I needed like a hole in the head but, they were asking $40 and I paid $35 just the cartridge alone told me yes the Ortofon 15 D looks almost new. The motor was good so needed only belt before I see it needed counter weight. Original dust cover swirls all over working but, I can make better. It was too good to pass up on. Again. Members like you helped me with many questions I had on the RB 4 b speakers. Btw, Rick, just to make sure: You're aware, that balancing the arm on the 1237 may not just require turning the counterweight, but also moving the rod, are you? I.e., if it won't balance, you may need to loosen the thumbscrew behind the VTF dial, so you can first move the rod for a crude balance and then fine-tune the balance by turning the counterweight.

And to be honest, I can't imagine, that there'd be many 1237s with the counterweight of the 1257. I'd rather think, that one of the counterweight variants for the 1237s looks very similar to the counterweight of the 1257. I'd expect the latter to rather be lighter than heavier and also different in detail, though, because the 1257 is a model with ULM arm, and the matching counterweight probably is one of those with a cap at the rear end, which can be removed for inserting an additional weight disc, that would have been part of the original halfinch-mount adaptor kit. And if you check the original Dual catalogues, you can also see that foremost silver counterweight variant of the 1237 - for example there: http://www.hifi-archiv.info/Dual/1978/dual78-79-19.jpg Hence my guess would rather be, that the foremost black couterweight variant and also the entirely black headshell version would belong to the chassis-only variant of the 1237, while the complete CS1237 came with the foremost silver counterweight and the black & silver headshell.

Thanks again. From what I can find on the other counter weights 604 & 511 photos does not look like the one that came with it. The CW needs to be replaced as it seems like rod has no threads to screw into. The CW feels like I am trying to screw into rubber or jelly. ? I can still use to balance. I am going to try what you suggest and go from there. again Rick
