Dual 1245 help ?

Hey folks, just picked up a Dual 1245 that’s in nice cosmetic shape (ugly dust cover though) and equipped with a Shure V-15 III DU needing a stylus. This was a yard-sale find and quite inexpensive. Dust cover is scratched and cracked.

Need some insight on how to make the automatic mechanism work as it should. This one doesn’t return the arm to rest and then shut off (yes, repeat is turned off). The arm also drops in different spots when pushing the lever to start. I’m assuming it’s all due to dried lubricant, but have added a tiny bit of oil to nearly every place I can see that was factory lubed just to try that. I do have the “service manual” .pdf (not yet read).
Just wondering if anyone else who’s played with the belt-drive Duals can offer advice on getting the arm to return consistently, and then have the unit shut off as it’s supposed to, and also stop & drop properly at the lead-in. Something simple, perhaps?

Did you check to see if the steuerpimpel on top of the cuing riser is still there or falling apart. There is also one underneath that has to make good contact with the arm that swings under the control of the main cam and runs the arm.

I have one of those.... bought it at a yard sale many years ago... installed my V15 III which I bought new in 1975. Great table, love to hear it's mechanism work. I think you are right about the lubricant. I'd replace or insure they are good, the steuerpimple as described above.. do that before attempting to adjust anything. I'm surprised controls aren't frozen. I rebuilt mine years ago, needs a bit of attention again but I'm using it as my main table.

Think I need to look up “steuerpimple” !

If this 1245 needs that part, is it something I can easily fabricate, or do I need to buy one? Who’s a good source to buy from?

Well - after taking it apart, it was pretty obviously missing the “steuerpimpel” - so I made one out of a piece of wooden dowel. I’m too cheap to spend money on such a simple part. Chucked up a short piece in my little lathe and drilled a hole to .080”, cut a 4mm length off, cleaned the movement pin with isopropyl, then stuck it on the pin with a tiny bit of slow-cure epoxy. I left it standing proud of the end of the pin by about 1mm or so. If it’s a tiny bit long, it’s easy enough to shorten. If too short, I can always add a tiny bit more epoxy to the end. I -will- make it work!!
I’ll post my results when it’s back together. ^_^

Watch it carefully to make sure it doesn't rub on the other parts of the mechanism as it functions. I made mine too big of a diameter at first and it bound up the tonearm at a certain point in the tonearm arc.

Tested it out and the wooden steuerpimpel works perfectly! Arm now goes where it’s supposed to!
Still have an issue with it running a bit fast on 33 and way too fast on 45 though (speed adjuster does nothing).
Also, it’s not shutting off when the arm returns to the perch automatically, but it does shut off when I move it there manually. Moving the lever to stop makes the arm lift from the perch, the set back down, but doesn’t shut it off.
Strange machines, these Duals. At least it wasn’t expensive.
