Dual 506 Info

Did you pick up a 506 or the CS-506? The manual for the CS-506 can be found on www.vinylengine.com. Look in the library section. The CS-506 was my second table. I still have it, though I don't use it anymore. It is a very good starter table and tracks extremely well, IMHO. I believe the Ortofon was the next generation of the FF15XE which I have and like very well. Tracking should be set to around 2 grams. This will be a good starting point. Play with it a bit and see where you like it the best between 1.5 and 3 grams. Good luck and good sound!

There was a 506 and a 506-1. The main visual difference was in the headshell. The 506 had a bright metal piece in the top while the 506-1 was all black. I think the cartridge adapters were different. Internally, the 506 had a 1 piece platter assembly while the 506-1 had a separate subplatter underneath where the belt was wrapped. Some later production 506 units may have also had the subplatter. Whether it was a CS or not made no difference from the mechanical perspective.

Having the CS-506-1, I can tell you that it does not have a sub-platter. The platter is a one piece stamped metal unit that has an integrated rim for the belt underneath. You are right about the headshell however. I also have a CS-606-1 which uses the other style ULM headshell (the one with the metal piece on top). Each has a different 1/2" cartridge adapter. They also take different versions of the original, Ortofon made, ULM cartridge. I still have the ULM cartridge for the 606, but swapped the one on the 506 for an OM-10. As I mentioned earlier, it is a decent starter table, but there are certainly better options further up in the Dual line.

That is interesting. I had read that Dual had converted to the platter/subplatter arrangement from the 505 in later 506 production. It looks like the conversion occurred later than the 506 to 506-1 changeover.
Do you find the 506-1 headshell an improvement over the earlier ULM? I had passed on some of these models because they did not include the universal adapters and the adapters seem to cost as much as the turntable.

Dual 506
HI. I have a Dual 506 and I run the tracking from 1.5-2 grams. I lost my manual somewhere in a multitude of moves in the last 30. I bought a repair manual on CD on bay for not much. Its got all of the adjustments and repairs info you should need. Its also copy protected or I'd just burn you a copy of the specs, but no go. Enjoy.

I'll have to check the serial number on my CS506-1. Maybe it is an early version. I have not had trouble with either ULM headshell. The CS606 has continuous tonearm wires whether using the ULM cartridge or the adapter. The CS506 has contacts in the headshell corresponding to contacts on the ULM cartridge and the adapter. The adapter has short wires to connect to a standard cartridge.
