Dual 601 - cartridge touches vinyl - fix?

Just bought in almost mint condition. Came with stock Shure V15 iii LM but body of cartridge clashes with a record.
Tracking force set at 1.25 so can't go much lower. Can't find anything online about raising the base of the arm? Is this possible? any other ideas?

^^^^^What he said, at less than $10 a digital scale is a must. It's also very possible the stylus suspension is completely shot.

Post up some pictures of the stylus sitting on the record.
 
I've found that zero'ing the Dual arm--maybe I'm just not very good at it--and then adjusting tracking force with dial isn't very accurate. Still takes several minutes working with either the Shure scale or the digital scale to get the VTF right.
I've been off by a full gram one way or the other. And then there's the time I had my scale set for ounces instead of grams, but I'd rather not talk about that.

That could be sibilance from a worn stylus or misalignment and have nothing to do with VTF. Using a digital scale makes setting VTF a simple straight forward task, the Shure analog scale is awesome but twice the price at $20. Personally I wouldn't be without both, it sure is nice having the Shure to be sure the digital scale is surely showing the correct VTF, surely this is clear by now, and stop calling me Surely lol.

Please post up pics of your stylus and arm when sitting on the record.
 
Some styli have a stiff suspension and won't budge even at 3x the nominal VTF. Some others, and the V15 is probably one of them, may be much more compliant. I would certainly get a digital scale. I was lost in the 70s when I didn't have one.
 
Yup, even though the scale on the knob is pretty accurate on my 601 I always set vtf with a digital scale.
Rocking a Shure M75 at 1.7 g:s without issue.
