Dual 604 Electronic Direct Drive

I'm new to turntables here, but I just found a Dual 604 in my house along with some LP's. I hooked up the turntable to a receiver with some speakers and everything seemed like it was going to be fine, but the turntable won't spin on its own. I can manually spin it and hear the sound, but when I move the needle over the vinyl all I hear is a click and then nothing. I've looked around for some solutions to this, but as I said I am quite new to turntables and so I don't know all of the terminology. I've read some things about it maybe being the belt but I'm not sure how to get to the belt.

Update: I removed the platter, but I don't see a belt anywhere. I assume that could be my problem, but nothing is turning underneath the platter.

The Dual 604 is a direct drive turn table, belt is probably not involve.

Your DUAL CS604 is a direct drive turntable, no belt required. I own the CS704, big brother to yours. These are actually decent decks, I did a refurb on mine last year, a table that I have owned since the early '80's. We sold a tonage of DUALs back then, it was a happy price point and pretty sexy in their timeframe.

I believe the 604, like the 704 are "semi- automatic": you must lift the tonearm by hand and move over the record and drop the cue. At the end of the lp, the tone arm will lift and shut off the platter. The click you are hearing is the switch that turns on the dd motor as you move it over the lead in groves. They were prone to fail, might be any easy fix.

Check the power cable to make sure it has not been damaged, could be the motor is gone.

The head shell is removable on these, and they will will accept any 1/2" mount cart. There are still replacements available on eBay from German suppliers. The pins on the back of the shell are spring loaded and get dirty and channel dropouts were not uncommon. Keep them clean. I had over 6 carts mounted on different head shells at one time.

I checked the power cord and it seemed okay, so I think it's probably something wrong with the motor. Is the motor something that I could replace myself, or would I want to go to a dealer/music repair shop to get it replaced?
 
Very likely the switch, referenced above. There is a site "fixmydual.com" that I have used in the past. Email them about motor availability. But try cleaning the switch first. Bunch cheaper than the motor.
 
I also saw many of the DUAL dd tables where the linkage under the table would get out of adjustment and cause a host of issues. I would cafefully clean contacts and pivot points there as a first step.

I'm assuming that I would have to take the head shell off in order to clean them?
 
The linkage is under the table, take a look under there and it will be obvious. Yes u need to remove thr head shell to clean the contacts there. But that is not the problem you are having. I do not recall the switch placement below off the top of my head. But check the service manual. I would start there and the linkage to mske sure all is functioning as designed.

I had a 604 for over 30 years before I sold it off. Worst mistake I ever made. With the exception of buying new cartridges, it never failed.
