Dual 701 doohickie

Found a Dual 701 at the GW the other day, good condition except for the destroyed cantilever on the Shure M91ED, and the arm won't move by itself. No binding, arm moves freely, but won't move when the Start lever is pressed and the platter starts spinning.

Inside, along with a cobweb and three moth carcasses, I found this doohickie on the bottom of the well. Is it significant? If so, where does it go?

Yeah, this is my 5th or 6th Dual, so well aware of the steuerpimpel issue. Wasn't sure the 701 still used it, but it sure does. After balancing the arm with the Grado cart and sled from my like-new other 701, this one does fully automate the arm at 45 RPM, but still won't fully work at 33. Also, the cueing has zero damping, and from what I've read that's going to be a PITA to fix.

I see steuerpimpels are on sale for $9.99 on fleabay. I guess the mystery part is probably some sort of wire management, so won't worry about it. Will probably just sell this one as a fixer-upper, looks like even in this condition they go for a good deal more that I paid. Hell, the sled goes for more than I paid! ;)
 
Your mystery part is a cable clamp. It will work well without - as long as no one tries to pull the Dual behind him at the cables...
 
So, finally got around to replacing the steuerpimpel on this. Mounted a Shure V15-III, and it's functioning nicely. Only issue now is the damping, fluid is no doubt gone, as the arm drops way too fast. From what I've read here and elsewhere, replacing the damping fluid on a Dual 701 is very challenging, so I'll not attempt.

What to do with a spare Dual 701? :dunno:

Greetings. Your 701 looks a lot like my 601. The stuerpimple is easy. It fixed the cue on a 1219. Your are right. It's hard. Used a parts 1219 to take it apart. Not bad, hard getting it back togather. Never again. I will leave that to Bill,Seth or Fred. Not doing those anymore!! The parts are really tiny. Give me a regreasing or a motor cleaning. Good to go. No more cues for me. Enjoy the 701! My 601 is my first belt drive Dual. Has the famous speed issue but I like it anyway. Keep your! The 601 makes four Dual's here along with a 1219,1229, and my 1010S! I have another 1219 needing a on-off switch. Plus a 1209 waiting for me. Never have enough. They are hard to part with. Miss my 1015 that went to the rocord store. Visit it when I can!

The damping paste in a 701 is only difficult the first time you try to do it. If you ever find the balls, be wary of the complex and very delicate moulded plastic part directly under the cue height adjustment screw. If it busts, you are up the creek w/o a you-know-what.
