Dual 701 - where to start first.

Well I am buying a non working Dual 701 and I am looking for some help diagnosing some problems indicated by the seller. I have a beautiful 701 restored by Fix My Dual and love it so much that I decided to by this project. Here is what the seller had to say...

“This was 'kind of' working when I received it. The 33 speed was pretty close, 45 was WAY off. the speed controls were completely gummed up. I freed the speed controls which allowed me to dial in the 33 perfectly. When set to 45 the motor still spun like a jet engine. Looking at the service manual I tried to see what would happen if I adjusted the 56 pots on the motor pcb. I just moved it a little bit and the motor STOPPED. Motor currently does not rotate in 33 or 45 so this is for parts or repair. This TT will probably also need a new 'steuerpimpel' because the arm does not move properly.”

I am just trying to get a game plan and wondering where I should start,....or is it dead? Any help is much appreciated.

I had a Dual 604 with a motor control board which would start and run normally, but after a while it would just coast to a stop. I eventually traced the problem to some tantalum capacitors on the motor control board. I replaced them with some electrolytics. Not sure that is your problem, but I'd start by looking at the capacitors on the motor control board.

Just got it home today. I’ll print the service manual and have a look at those caps.
