The 721 came with a Shure V15 Type III. While the 721 had the early model and the later model the Shure was the same. The V15 III-DM has a wonderful sound and performs very well. It was glued into the correct postion for the Dual turntable rather than the nuts bolts you always see. The cart can be found easy enough but the stylus often needs replacement or can. On stylus replacement JICO makes a fine one, in fact really two for it.

You can start by looking at Shure, Audio Technica & Ortofon (2M series). Duals were designed around the Ortofons.

The picture you posted in another thread is of a nice looking first model 721. What do you have on it now? Hard to tell from the picture but perhaps all it may need is a stlyus replacement.

it has an audio technica but theres no tellin how long it has been on there. What makes a head shell go bad, how can i tell. Also how can i tell if the stylus is even bad. I was just gonna replace the whole shabang. I definantly want to make this table sound its best, it is gonna stay my main rig for awhile. I picked her up from the original owner complete with dual packet full of all kinds of goodies like manual and warranty card.

Audio Technica made some nice ones. Do have a mid-level cartidge on a Pioneer turntable that sounds very good and found at least on that one the stylus could be upgraded in line and still fit the cart as you often see. I have never had a cartridge that went bad but they do. Stylus can wearout from use too many hours and sound less wonderful to down right bad and do damage.

Your turntable is one of the top favorites on the German Dual Board.
http://www.dual-board.de/ if you use the Google convert to english it can be fun.

The strobe light can flicker off and on, and if the contacts are cleaned it often works like new.

Thanks for the tip on the cool gear on CL.
