Looks like it needs to have old grease (dried out) cleaned out and regreased. These 40 plus old turntables need a good cleaning. My latest project, a Garrard Zero 100 had similar issues. Mine would not start and shut off. The levers inside also effect the record size. The grease was so dry it nothing worked. Almost beyond repair. After much effort working oil into the levers, heating it with a solder gun it loosened up.
On Duals, many have a large gear that makes the levers move the arm. Look at the gear. There is a lever from it and the bottom of the tonearm. Don't force it to move. As the arm goes across the record it moves the lever that at the end of the record, it trips the auto return. Chances the grease has dried and it causing your problem. Hope this helps and you understand what I wrote.
