Dual CS 1237 issue

so my inherited Dual starts the process of LP posting by moving into position and immediately returning and turning off. Manually moving the tone arm works fine and the stopping process does as well. Any ideas are very welcomed thanks

Let it "cycle" once by starting it with the tonearm locked on its rest (as suggested in the user manual...) - that's practically a "mechanical reset".

Ugh it must have deeper issues. It goes down and tastes the vinyl then immediately back up and home to start.

Looks like it needs to have old grease (dried out) cleaned out and regreased. These 40 plus old turntables need a good cleaning. My latest project, a Garrard Zero 100 had similar issues. Mine would not start and shut off. The levers inside also effect the record size. The grease was so dry it nothing worked. Almost beyond repair. After much effort working oil into the levers,heating it with a solder gun it loosened up.

On Duals, many have a large gear that makes the levers move the arm. Look at the gear. There is a lever from it and the bottom of the tonearm. Don't force it to move. As the arm goes across the record it moves the lever that at the end of the record, it trips the auto return. Chances the grease has dried and it causing your problem. Hope this helps and you understand what I wrote.

Great stuff! Thank You. These are out of my comfort zone until now. Tearing something apart with zero plan would have been foolish.

Take a look at the STEUERPIMPLE. Easiest to diagnose, and replace.

No one has touched upon the cause. OP says that the arm goes into position, then goes back to rest and shuts off.
The fact that the thing starts another cycle means that the trip prawl on the gear is remaining in the 'let's begin another cycle' mode. OP just needs to discover whether it is getting re-activated by an external lever, or the prawl never gets 'reset' at the end of cycle. Can be as simple as grease on the prawl put there by an unknowing mechanic.
