Dual CS5000 - New Headshell, Cartridge, and Stylus

Hi there. I've been reading these forums for years, but this is my first post.

I have a Dual CS5000 with the original headshell and a Shure M44E cartridge. I'm recently having issues with that setup and have decided it's time to replace it. I'm looking at the following as a replacement. I'm curious what folks think about this as a match for the CS5000. Something else that you'd recommend in that price range? Thank you in advance...

Yes, the Ortofon Super OM30 is a very good cartridge and its high-compliance stylus is well-suited to the low-mass arm of the CS5000. You'll probably find it more detailed than the M44E but not as warm.
 
Sorry, I missed the headshell bit. That SME-type headshell isn't compatible with the arm of the CS5000. The cartridge is fine, but the headshell no.

Thank you for the info! Any recommendation on a headshell? Sorry I am fairly new to turntable setup, so I appreciate the advice and the patience.
 
I think you need the Dual experts to address the question about the headshell, as I'm not sure whether that headshell is specific to the CS5000 or whether there are alternatives.
 
Oh, yeah, I saw that. And the Ortofon cartridge should work with that? Again, thank you for your patience with my ignorance.
 
gf: That's the later, non-VTA-Adjustment type of headshell for the Golden 1, CS750(-1) and Golder/Silver Stone, but can also be used on the CS5000. And yes, it's standard halfinch-mount, so you can use it for mounting an Ortofon OM/SuperOM.

What issues are you having? Is your original CS5000 headshell damaged or broken? Usually headshells don't go bad unless there is physical damage or the leads / tags become corroded and need to be cleaned or replaced. If the headshell is OK I would consider keeping it in play and replacing the Shure cartridge with the Super OM30 so you have VTA.

The rear end of the cartridge is sitting lower than the stylus. I have taken it apart and put it back together, but I can't seem to fix that issue. The VTA adjustment on top of the headshell can pop right out, and seems to do nothing. I assumed it was broken (I recently had a lot of company and drunk people playing the turntable; never again). I actually started a post to address that issue, but instead I thought I might start over with a simpler setup. How desirable is the VTA adjustment when it is working properly? I'm likely showing my ignorance here, so please be nice haha!
 
VTA is nice to have but by no means a deal breaker. Since your headshell is damaged the LPGear replacement headshell is a good choice. The Ortofon OM series cartridges are fairly straight forward to setup. The OM20 or 30 are both good options.

I actually just purchased that head shell from LP Gear for my CS5000 @groovefish and it works very nicely. I also have the OME head shell with the VTA adjustment but wanted a spare because of how flimsy it is! I think the rigidity, resulting in a reduction in potential resonance and just being less fragile are a decent trade off for no VTA adjustment.

Oh, and mind you, that there also are two sub-variants of the headshell, Crab33 has linked to above - namely with and without the connector block insert (with cartridge lead wires). That's because Fehrenbacher has re-used that heashell type for a few later Dual and Thorens models - and when they ran out of the connector block insert for the arm, they switched those models to longer, directly cartridge-clip-terminated tonearm wires plus headshell without connector block insert. So, as you need the variant with the connector block insert, it can be a good idea to ask the vendor about that detail, to make sure you don't get the wrong version.

Just curious... are you using the correct stylus on the M44E? These old Shure cartridges can often take each other's styli but they don't always sit at the correct angle relative to the cartridge body.

Yes, it actually worked fine for years. The issues I described are a recent development. Thanks for checking.
