Dual Problems..

Hello Everybody,

Im new in town and trying to get a recently acquired system up and running...Its a Sony 230 TT and STR - 6036 Receiver Amp..

My First problem is Ive only got sound coming out of one channel..
Its definately not a speaker problem...all cables are correct..all switches are where they should be..I have moved the Monitor button in and out a good couple of times in order to ' clean ' it ....to no avail....

My Second Problem is the TT is not working...when I engage it, it only moves very slowly..Ive lifted the Platter and found in the bottom left hand side a reel moving non stop when system on...Please see attached pic with it pointed out..

the TT was working last week..dont know whats occured..

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated..

Sound from one channel, on all sources? or just TT, check fuses? What model Dual? have you cleaned all switches? switched speaker cables, Cleaned headshell contacts?

Search around on here for Dual services, there's not doubt that it will have gummed up grease in the moving parts. The muting switch may dirty, or your contacts at the headshell may be dirty. Also, you may need a new stylus for your cartridge. Duals aren't the worst to work on, if you're mechanically inclined, so you could have some fun and learning with that deal!

It's not a Dual, it's a Sony. I was confused by the title too.

Yeah, by "dual", he means two, not Dual.



Heraldo, the "reel" you mention is called the motor pulley and it is mounted on the motor shaft. It turns the rubber wheel to the right in your picture and that is called the idler wheel. The idler wheel, in turn, turns the platter by bearing against the platter rim. The idler wheel is normally pulled toward the pulley and platter rim by a spring that kind of jams it between the two so the platter turns.

Be sure the spring is there and doing what it's supposed to. Also, clean the edge of the idler wheel so there is friction between it and the other two parts. If the idler wheel rubber is dried/stiff, you may have to get a new one or have the old one re-rubbered.

Two (not dual) Points:

1) There is a "Turntables" section in the forum, and there might be some people who mainly read it.

2) As you noticed, "Dual" is a turntable make, so when you put that word (even with a small d), the first thought a lot of folks will have is you are having problem with a Dual.

On the other hand, the classic Duals are idler drives like that Sony, so you might want to attract them!

Your problem (A) if you have both channels with other sources, but not with the turntable, you might just have some corrosion to clean. (Dual owners know a lot about this.) The pins on the cartridge and/or clips that go on them could need cleaning. If the cartridge is mounted in a removable headshell, where the headshell mounts on the tonearm contacts could be corroded, too. If you don't have any sort of electrical contact cleaner, rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab will work. Be careful with the little clips and wires when removing them and reattaching them to the cartridge, as some break easily. You might want to do them one pin at a time if you think you might mix them up. You said you know your cables are good. It can help to clean the sockets they plug into.

As for problem (B) I'm not real clear on what you say is happening.

Looking back at your post, I'll give problem B a try. It might be normal for the motor to run if it the start mechanism has been triggered, and the turntable has not turned enough for the tonearm to return when the end of a record is reached or the stop button is pressed. You say the turntable barely turns, so effectively the motor is running because the table is still in mid operating cycle. Now why isn't it moving?

It could be the rubber idler wheel isn't engaging with it right when you (or somebody before you) removed and replaced it. Maybe the idler and the surface it runs against are dirty (alcohol and swab will clean it), or maybe the rubber of the wheel is getting hard and glazed along the drive surface. If the latter, position the rubber wheel so that the moving shaft drives it, and with the other hand lightly hold some very fine sandpaper against it. You're just trying to improve the surface, not really take off any rubber. Or the problem could be that the platter bearing needs lubrication (whatever the platter is sitting on or spinning around). A droplet or two of a light machine oil (nothing with any solvents in it that are unfriendly to plastics) may help greatly. Be sure not to get any oil on the rubber idler wheel or the inner drive surface of the platter--even fingerprints. The wheels, gears, linkages underneath could be gummy, too, and needing relube, but try these things first.

I would definitely start by giving that receiver a very good internal cleaning, could be very well that's all it needs to solve it's channel problem?
I strongly recommend that you follow this sticky in General Audio Discussion, on cleaning receivers, good tips and advice, use it as a guide?
