Dumb JBL 4430 question

The JBL 4430 has two sets of speaker posts on the back, one says for internal cross over the other for "external crossover". Since there are three separate drivers in the cabinet, what exactly would the external crossover be supplying? I suspect the answer is obvious, but I couldn't find the answer in the jbl literature I was able to google. Thanks Norm

The 4430 is actually a two-way with a bi-radial horn and should have a switch on the crossover for bi-amping the system. You'll need an external crossover to bi-amp because you'll be by-passing the passive internal unit except, I believe, for the equalization built into the passive crossover for the HF compression driver controlled by the front-panel L-pads for mid and hi-frequency levels. JBL used their own electronic crossover and prorgam cards specific for your speaker though many have used electronics from Ashly with success.

I'm sure those smarter than I am will correct as necessary.
 
I believe this info to be completely correct. Our own member here, Zilch, who is also a highly knowledgeable member of the Lansing Heritage Forum, knows exactly everything there is to know about these, and all other JBL Pro Monitors.

If you can find the 2344(A) Biradial horns (~$200/pair, used,) they're an excellent build for an intermediate-level DIYer that'll kick the butt of just about anything under $10k, in my view.... :yes:

Wish I could find a pair of 2344a for $200/pr...

However, the next question becomes what drivers do you stick on them? 2421, 2425 or 2426 were supplied by JBL, as I understand it, but would that be the best choice now?

All of mine have 2425/6H, which are the same except for the exposable "snoot" on 26Hs, though I do have a pair of 2421 diaphragms for experiments.

4430s have been my mains for 20 years now; I don't mess with the stock ones, but my clone thread on LHF is, well, "notorious...." ;)
