Dust cover causing noise?

I noticed that with some turntables (new ones, in my experience), I hear motor noise through the cartridge when the dust cover is down. I noticed this on the U-Turn Orbit and the Pro-Ject Debut DC. It wasn't particularly noisy or disruptive, I only noticed it during silences or very quiet parts of the music, but there was no denying it. When I lifted the dust cover, the noise stopped. When I placed pads between the dust cover and the plinth, the noise stopped.

Has anyone else noticed this on other tables? What has been your solution to it?

Pretty much standard for turntables. Dust covers keep the dust off, but should be taken off when playing.

The dustcover picks up noise from the speakers and noise from the deck itself.

Many dustcovers when raised, put sufficient weight at the rear of the deck to upset the balance of the entire deck.

Noticed in on my Music Hall MMf 2.1 that I bought in 2001 ... my solution was to play it w/out the dust cover on. I put the dust cover back
on when the TT goes into storage. In between times ... I just use cloth to cover the platter when not in use... the arms & sides, I just dust w/
a high quality craft brush.

My Tech SL 1210M5 plays w/ any noticeable sound from the dust cover on. I've always played this table with the dust cover down.

That's what they do. It's like noticing fumes coming out of a car's tail. With the exception of my SL-12XX and my suspended Thorens TT's, every single turntable I ever had that came with a dust cover - did that. The technics, by the way, has stock rubber pads on the front of the rims of the dust cover. I think you found your solution.

I have to have the dust cover on. I have a dog that sheds. Hair gets everywhere.

If the turntable is properly isolated and the dustcover is of sufficient heft it should never be a problem, and isn't with my Pioneer PL-550. Before I had the isolation down pat, I found that a towel placed over the dust cover with a weight on it helped to keep the dust cover from 'ringing' or picking up vibrations at high volume.

Any turntable in stock OEM condition has problems with vibration, it’s up to the individual to analyze and overcome such design limitations !!!! Notice additional dampening material at the center and under the platter of a turntable. Why, because of vibration from moving parts under the platter. Results.....improved separation and soundstage !

Obtaining a stock turntable is only the beginning.....

Thanks for the information, guys. Playing a record without the dust cover isn't the end of the world (and I'm glad to know others do that), so I think that would be an acceptable option for me :)
