dust cover sounds

Dustcover material plays a big part in transmitting the noise as well. I have an acrylic dust cover that I made for my clearaudio tt. It came originally from a pioneer pl41. It's a separate unit from the tt and it makes no difference whether it's up or down or completely removed. I also have a hard plastic cover on my thorens that rings like a bitch so it sounds better if it's removed completely. Up or down it still rings so I remove it when I'm using the thorens. I'd have to agree that there isn't one size fits all. Whatever set-up that seems to work best for you is the one I'd recommend that you use.

Maybe some models of turntables are just badly designed. Some electronics are like that. I have a TV (early 1980s model) and the speaker ACTUALLY leaves a purple blotch on the corner of the picture from the damn magnet.

The high-end turntables usually a 'cakebox' type dust cover, if anything. You have no choice but to remove it to play a record.

I think ANY dustcover is a microphone regardless of what it's made of. Turntables pick up enough external noise with no dust cover. I am surprised at some of the comments on here after hearing so many people talk about isolating their tables with granite bases and sandboxes only to leave the dustcover on the table. Put your fingertips on the cover lightly while playing a record and feel what it's picking up. Mine only goes back on the turntable when I power the system down.

i leave them permanently off and simply leave an old record on the platter when not im use to keep the platter mat clean

...a cosmetic make-up brush makes a nice and effective duster for any other dust and debris that settles on the plinth or tonearm

:D my new tube amp came with one of those for dusting, gets right in the tight spots.

Please tell me it's not an RCA, I used to work for them back then.

You mean my TV? Yea it's a 13" 1983 RCA XL-100 lol
LOL but other than that, the thing's in perfect condition and it's got the nicest picture quality I've ever seen.
