Repairing Dustcover Hinges on Dual CS 508

Hello,

I just purchased a Dual CS 508 turntable on eBay. It's my third turntable and my second Dual, my first being a CS 630 Q. Everything on the turntable is beautiful and I've got it working perfectly, except for the right hinge on the dustcover.

The 508's dustcover has hinges that slide forward as they open up, allowing the turntable to be placed closer to the wall. The left hinge works great, it's strong and moves fluidly. But the right hinge only has limited movement.

Does anyone have experience in these hinges and making them work? I'd appreciate any guidance in the matter, as I don't want to break anything in the process of fixing the hinge.

See, that's what I thought, but I removed the screw and it did nothing to fix the problem, so I tightened it all the way, and no change. I'm beginning to think the hinge might be a casualty of the massive detour to Alaska the turntable took while in route from TN to Chicago.
 
It's been awhile since I was inside my 508 -- I think the bottom cover comes off fairly easy. Once off, you can see what the problem is.
 
Great advice so far - do remove the bottom to access the black plastic hinge assembly. It's held in place with tho screws. Take a look at it - the plastic tabs that hold the two halves of the case together can break, and the hinge won't function properly. If so, remove it, hold the 2 halves together and simply tape it together - works fine, and the repair cannot be seen.
 
Bohhey, I just stumbled upon your website from the Dual reference site. I had visited before but didn't realize you were an AKer then. If my 1249 ever needs service, I'll know who to contact. :yes:
 
Sorry to hijack, but on the 1249 have you changed out the SM-840 motor to the SM-860? If not, it will need to be done, unless you got the 1 out of 20 good ones! If so, go to Vegas!

Boohey is exactly right - the clamshell halves start to open & the spring can get a bit jammed. I once machined some metal channel to hold the hinge assembly closed - typical engineer/machinist overkill. These days I'd try some binder clips from Office Depot/Staples - or good tape.

The SM-840 motor is more likely to run at the right speed if the load on the motor is more toward the heavy side. Practically, this means that at the instant that power hits the motor it tries to "sync" at two speeds -- let's call them "high" and "low."

If the belt is slippery and loose, the motor can "sync" at "high." If the belt has more grip and is tighter, the motor has much greater difficulty spinning at a higher speed, however briefly, and will tend to stabalize at "low" (33).

Thanks, everyone. I opened the turntable bottom, took off the hinge assembly, and opened it up. When I did so, the contents all rocketed out. I placed them back in their working order and put it all back together and it is working swimmingly.

I appreciate your help.
