There's NO DVD player that can sound even close to a high end CD player such as my Audio Research CD7. I have found that a good DVD player can sound as good or better than most CD only players in the under $1,000 or so range. Many audiophiles have tried DVD players in their system and although the SACD on a DVD player can sound nice nothing can beat a good CD player. I have a Denon 3910 DVD player that has very nice audio but there is no comparison to a well built and designed CD only player.

I've been reading a bit about this player. Please describe a bit more, I never thought I might even look at something so expensive, but...

Did you here it next to the CD3 MKII, or is it night and day. My Cambridge Audio CD6 which I really like and have since heard it against a mcd205, Rega Saturn, CEC 151xr the belt drive, I haven't been able to part with. The CEC still lingers in my thoughts out of all the ones I tried so far though.

I heard an Ayre too, but wonder if in the long run that might be fatiguing?

Thanks

This is simply not true! Here is a link to a discussion I started at headfi.com. Those guys really know what they are talking about.

Also you can take a look over at SACDmods.com Matt Anker is an engineering student at Ohio State and he does brilliant work modifying both DVD and CD players.

You can click on the Sony DVP NS9100ES link to read some technical (but not too technical) stuff on the differences between CD and DVD players.

I know people with custom built $12,000 amps that use modified DVD players as their source.

I've listened to the Rega Apollo, and while a fine player well worth the money, it doesn't hold a candle to a modified DVD player. No where near the refinement, resolution and impact of a modified DVD player. It's amazing what less than $1,500 will buy these days.

However if you don't wish to spend over $1,000 or simply want to keep it simple, it's hard to beat the Rega Apollo at around $800.
