DVD player as a dedicated CD player.!

I use a Denon DVD 5910 DVD/SACD/DVD-Audio/CD unit as my CD player in a second system.

Introduced in 2005, the DVD 5910 is the successor to Denon's previous flagship player, the DVD-9000. While I am not a fan of the Burr-Brown DAC chip, the transport mechanism & laser unit is top notch and built well.

I use the optical output from the DVD 5910, which bypasses the internal DAC chipset, and that plug into a Yulong D18 Sabre DAC, which then feeds a Yamaha CR-1010 receiver via RCA.
I am intrigued to know what kind of DAC chip do you like ??

I have, with literally the equivalent of a $5 player and several different ones up to more than $1000 used as transports.

It's the basis for my opinion.

In fact, those who partipated actually preferred the the analog outputs of a particular CDP more than the most expensive player used as a transport with the Benchmark DAC-1 that was the common external DAC used for comparison.
All ears are not created equally I guess, my experiences and my friends differ from yours, C'est la vie

If you need me to explain why a "better" transport "is" a better transport then I guess you need to speak with an English major lol.

It's like asking why a tt that spins the record more accurately, more immune to outside influences, etc matters. The dac can be thought of as a cable extension, no matter how good it is, crap in one end crap out of the other.

Ok let's look at this a different way, take two identical cd players, set one on top of a paint shaker while playing, which do you think will sound better? So, it seems that the heavier, more solidly constructed, better built, better laser assembly, etc etc transport will, well, transport better. It's actually pretty simple.
I agree the quality of the transport matter. It isn't the same the transport used in an unit that cost $50.00 than an unit that cost $2000.00.

Digital data is either there or it isn't. There is certainly a level at which some transports no longer reliably deliver a bit perfect copy of whats on the disc, but thats a low bar.

It's kinda like this, imagine you have a pristine copy of your favorite album on your shelf. It won't sound any different if your fat cousin or your hot mistress carries it from the shelt to you before you put in on the turntable. As long as neither of them drops the album along the way, the end result is the same. She may look a lot better doing it (or not depending on your game) and probably costs a lot more, but its the same record either way. Same goes for the digital data going to the DAC. As long as it gets there intact, then its going to sound the same. The only quality difference might be a noisy transport, reliability in the long run, or in strange cases electrical noise. But it cant change the sonic characteristics any more tham your fat cousin or hot (or not) mistress.

Of course there's a difference, the cheapskates just hope if they say there isn't enough times then it will be true lol.

You gave the reasons : As long as it gets there intact, then its going to sound the same. Nice try. LOL.
Not at all, show me below where it says "he would NEVER say" etc.

If I say I'm not going to the store does that mean I'm "never" going to the store? I think not, see what I did there lol?

I have yet to hear the musical difference between transports, but the sound of deflection and back-pedaling is unmistakable.

I have yet to hear the musical difference between transports, but the sound of deflection and back-pedaling is night and day.
Now this ^^^^^^ is back pedaling.
As I've already stated, my friends experiences, and mine differ from yours. Sorry but it's impossible for you to hear through my ears, or my friends so proof is well.............

Ok, lets look at this a different way, you prove to me "you" hear no difference. And if it's a fact you can't, I'm sorry you're missing out.

Look for one that plays SACD and DVD-A. I've picked up a few in thrifts, I consider this a completely valid approach. You may have to temporarily hook up a display to set up.

@DVjorge But like I said, its a low bar. Most CD players meet that need and the few that don't are just crap.

I believe he agrees with you (and I) from a reproduced sound quality perspective, generally speaking.

The importance of asthetics, durability, etc. is a consideration, but that is a different matter.

Been using DVD players for music for years now.
I'm sure technology has made great leaps over the years in players, but my tired ears will not benefit.

Years ago I had Carver something unit that plugged into a CD player to give adjustable dither? A/B two identical players with two identical CD's. None of the test subjects listeners could tell any differences.

Sold the Carver to someone who cared.

Now, I have another question this debate brought to the light, does an external DAC will be ALWAYS a better option than the internal one that comes with the player ?? If so, it is good idea to get any transport with an optical output and to buy a quality external DAC. Does it means better sound quality ?? What you guys have to say about it ??

Oerets, I'm right there with you.

I picked up a very tired Denon DCD-1500 II cdp awhile back. This was high dollar in 1990 or so. Put a new belt on it, fixed the clamp with a new application of felt, and cleaned/greased. I LOVE this player, tho a person here on this site told me, after I praised it, what a turd it was.

Sorry, I don't agree, and have a/b'd my beloved Yamaha CDX-1100U versus a super-modded Oppo, and I preferred the Yammie.

Different strokes for different folks. Me, I love a quality transport, but I would think zeroes and ones are just zeroes and ones in regard to Digital out.

And I don't care WHAT you guys say, the behavior on this thread is ugly, and not in the spirit of AK. One who is initially attacked or criticized is NOT justified to keep rebutting.
Jesus, ya'll. Let the semantic games end.

I think "always" (or never/no/not) are rare in any case.

One thing is pretty well assured though. An separate DAC affords some degree of flexbility generally not inherent in an all-in-one box solution.

People speak of DACs quite a bit but there is opinion the DAC (chip) make/model itself matters less than the implementation and or surrounding/supporting analog circuits.
