DVD player for CDs

I bought my Marantz DVD/SACD/DVDA player mainly to move my Onkyo DVD player into the bedroom, and in the hopes that the Marantz would sound a little better. I was shocked by how much better the Marantz sounded. For $240. If the source can be passed on to the preamp-amp-speakers with higher fidelity, of course it will sound better. I'm convinced that actually listening to different players on the same system is the only way to know which is better.
 
I bought a Sony DVD player for this reason. It plays fine and sounds fine, it just sucks to not be able to control it from the front panel. I has a play, stop and eject button and that's it. That was fine until I found out the on unit display doesn't even show track number or anything. It just showed time. So I don't use that anymore. I bought a TEAC CD player online, just waiting for it to arrive now.

My friend has a Pioneer Elite Player from a while back and we compared it to a recent Toshiba model (3900 or so - forgot the number) and they were comparable. The Pioneer had better depth, the Toshiba had better presence. But the Pioneer was run through a DAC.

Then we switched the Toshiba to run through the DAC and it was the winner.

I then bought the same DAC - real cheap, the Xin Sheng DAC-01 and hooked it up to my system. You can hook up normal analog L/R signals and also hook up the single RCA/75R digital output. Then when you switch the inputs, same music, you can hear the difference. At low volumes, using small speakers.

My best guess is that, with each new generation of Toshiba DVDs, they use the current generation of DACs and this accounts for the better sound. And this makes the sound better and at prices below $50 from stores like Best Buy.

You don't get the fancy remote controls, nor the loading speed, but you get close to the best possible sound for under $150 including the DAC.

I use a Marantz DV 8300 as a CDP . does a great job, loads fast with CDs unlike some newer machines such as the Marantz DV6001 I use for DVD's which is appalling in its load speed.
