Hello folks, someone fairly local to me is selling a used DVD player (Denon) that also plays SACD for very little money (£30). This is a bargain right? Am I correct in saying its difficult to get something that plays SACD for this little money?! Or is there a catch somewhere?

not all DVD players that play SACD are created equal
Way back in the day when CD first came out I purchased a $1000 multidisc player and the SQ sucked, I blamed it on the media, then later realized it was the player.
So yrs later on the rave reviews comparing it to the $1500 Rega Planet I purchased a Sony DVP NS500V from Audio Advisor for $379 if memory serves. It also sucked, and as before I continued with my records.
At the time I purchased the 500V Sony also offered the DVP NS900V for $1000, but after the let down of the $1000 multi-disc player I wasn't ready to plunk down that kind of coin again. So about 5yrs ago I see the 900V on eBay for $80, I figure what do I have to lose?
So now I have two of them, along with a Sony DVP NS999ES and a Sony DVP CX777ES and they all are excellent machines that play music.
I paid no more than $80 for each of these but prices have gone up since.

Don't buy anything for the bargain, buy for the desire to enjoy SACDs. After experiencing 5.1 SACDs, stereo in any format is like drinking a Coke that's gone flat, no fizz.

I have two DVD/SACD players.
A Yamaha DVD S-1800. It has four DACS, 5.1 analog out, Coax audio out, two channel audio out, HDMI out and a couple more. It does not have DVD-A capability. Available only used.
A also have a Sony UVP-X700. It also plays everything including 4K video but not DVD-A. It has no analog outputs. It does have coax, optical and 2 HDMI output. One HDMI out is strictly audio.

make sure your kit can accept a 5.1 analog input.
If it is Denon x9xx player, then go get it. Those are good and can play Self Made SACD too

Sony DVP NS999ES.....I have that unit. Needs to find a home.
Nobody has mentioned Marantz. They made some nice units that will play SACD. The CD 5001 I have works great.
(Surprising to see some sold prices, I guess $12 was a good buy 8 years ago)

I wouldn't buy anything with the Rega name.

It may be a bargain if the laser is in good shape.. I'd ask for a demo using your own SACD disc to see if it works as it should..
Some Denon's used a Hitachi transport and there are still generic lasers available ( of questionable quality though )..
