DVD players as CD players

I used a Toshiba 3960 in my main rig for about a year, I thought it sounded good.Couldn't bitch about the price either,(60.00).the build quality was crappy though....
 
I have a Pioneer DV-525 in another room(bonus room with a second theater). This player BLOWS AWAY any older CD player I put up against it. It is capable of 24/96khz resolution. I was VERY impressed with this unit. As for the Sony I just bought - in the manual, it makes mention of what I thought was a very cool feature. Switchable digital filtration! There are two settings. I haven't done any critical listening either way yet, but I am looking forward to hearing this unit. I see that(I assume) as a cost-cutter(?), Sony decided to use a hybrid-pulse D/A converter vs. the ES-standard pulse version. Anybody know why for sure? DOn't get me wrong - the hybrid sounds good, but my old CDP-C90ES had the pulse DAC and it sounded remarkable. No worries though. My receiver will be doing all the conversion anyway. It just struck me as odd is all.

I have a Denon 1920 and it does video and music very well. Would love to get an older Denon CD player and do a little testing. I like the 1920 very much.
 
cdp or dvd for cd playback,? I think it all depends on the overall design and your own ears but if i were going to use i dvd for cd play i would choose sony for the warmer sound that thay privide
 
I just bought a Rotel RC-970BX preamp and hook it up to my tube amps. At first I hooked up my Yamaha CDX-450 CD Player and listened for a while. Something wasn't right. The treble seemed to be muddled. I figured it was because it was a CD I made myself.

On a whim I swapped the Yamaha for my Onkyo DV-CP701 6-Disc DVD changer. Yes I know...playing CD's on a DVD player *hides*. Playing CD's on a DVD CHANGER *hides even more*.

But it sounds great. Just wish the player wasn't 17" deep.

Might try my DV-SP502 instead.
