Both excellent speakers, particularly for their modest size. The weakest point on both of them is the high frequency response. The Dynaco has very nice Seas drivers, although the high end rolls off a little bit early. The AR4x has a little more high end, but sometimes leans a little toward "harsh" if the tweeter control is up beyond "NORM" position.
On the AR4x, lookout for the tweeter cone coming unglued from the frame (common problem) and of course the tweeter control pot corrosion issue which causes intermittent dead spots on the control. The Dynaco tweeter control is far less problematic (it is a click stop type) and the tweeters are less prone to age related failure, but that being said I think the AR4x is a better sounding speaker overall with deeper bass response and better highs. The crossover design in the Dynaco uses no inductor coil for the woofer and is a simple 8 mfd (I think) blocking capacitor with a resistor network for the tweeter control while the AR 4x uses a low bandpass coil for the woofer and a 22 mfd cap for the tweeter. This causes an unusually low crossover point for the 4x tweeter (which it is designed for) covering the midrange very well and providing deeper bass response.
If you can get the grill off of the AR's check the tweeter cone and also the woofer edge because a few (very rare few) had foam surrounds toward the end of production. Almost all of them have treated cloth surrounds so the foam rot is rarely an issue and all of the Dynacos have butyl rubber surrounds. Whichever one you buy, change the crossover capacitors to protect the tweeters, and if the AR 4x tweeters are coming unglued they can be reglued with rubber cement or speaker surround adhesive. The pots in the AR 4x's can be disassembled and cleaned, just make sure to reseal the woofers if you work in the cabinets (goes for Dynaco as well).
The Marantz 2240 or 2245 is an excellent choice for either one of those speaker systems, SX-1250 has too much juice. Dynaco A-25 woofers will burn out if pushed too hard, AR not as likely, but don't push it! I'd buy 'em both - one for system A ond one for system B! :thmbsp:
*ADD-ON* I should add that I have and use both systems regularly, so this is not from memory but actual experience - still just an opinion, though.
