Dynaco A 25 proper alignment?

Should the Dynaco A25 be mounted horizontally or vertically...or does it matter? I'm asking because if they're bookcase speakers I would think they should be placed horizontally, as the control panel on the rear indicates. But all the pictures I've seen show them vertical, as mine are. Does it even matter?

TIA

It don't really matter. Just try to have the tweets (located in the "top half" when standing vertical) more or less level with your ears for maximum top end. I have mine on their sides on a shelf that puts them an inch from the ceiling in my relatively small living room, over some windows. The 2 flat surfaces (wall w/ windows and ceiling) help the bottom end out immensely. Having them up high like that also helps get the top end out in the room.

Horizontal isn’t the way to better sound, but doubt that matters with these. Additionally, the rear of the box is set up to be mounted both ways.

Bookshelf is a size designator for speakers, not necessarily a recommended placement. The term bookshelf is from the era of the Bozak floor speakers like the Concert Grand, end table speakers like the Urban, big! and the introduction of the acoustic suspension models from Acoustic Research and their advertising showing some models on the bookshelf. Perfect for the WAF vs big boxes in the living room.

So generally, any speaker 1 foot square and 2 feet tall or less would be considered a bookshelf speaker no matter where it is recommended to place it for best sound.

Check out these Bozak poop sheets from ‘68 and earlier.

We all know about the AR-3 and it’s general size, from the same era when AR developed the Acoustic Suspension design.

The A25s will be slightly better in uniformity and symmetry of horizontal dispersion, with the cabinets vertical, as opposed to horizontal orientation.

The tweeter offset to one side of the vertical center of the woofer, will reduce the performance difference between the two orientation- but the tweeter orientation IS closer to directly above the woofer center in the vertical orientation... which is where the slight advantage in horizontal dispersion symmetry comes from. This usually results in very slightly better perceived imaging and soundstaging performance, vertical.

Gordon.

Ideally drivers should be aligned vertically for the simple fact that we have a left and a right ear and not a top and a bottom ear. Imaging is affected less negatively if the drivers are aligned vertically. Tweeters should always be at ear level when you are seated in the listening position because high frequencies have shorter wavelengths than lower frequencies thus making them more directional.
