Terry,
I'm not denying 'rock-solid Physic's' as you claim, but it is much harder to implement and integrate a sub into an existing system to give it that holistic sound, plus more expensive to do it correctly. I'm just saying the vintage A25's sound fine 'n dandy as they are. Just my 2¢ as an owner of them in a minimalist tube system.
The A-25 is a very nice speaker. However, the addition of a "decent" subwoofer can certainly improve the sound a great deal. I'm afraid there are just a lot of "indecent" subs that people have tried and found total frustration with the results. I've also listened to quite a few systems that used very expensive equipment that sounded incredibly bad. The thing is, that a well set-up and integrated modest system can, and quite often does, sound a great deal better. You've mentioned the expense of a subwoofer, which naturally is likely to cost something, but I can't honestly remember a time when the cost of a nice (powered) subwoofer has been less, at least if you're willing to put it together yourself (like one of PE's kits).
Best Regards,
