Dynaco A25 - Dead Tweeter

Hello all!

I bought A25s 2 months ago for $175, and just last weekend one of the tweeters was going in and out. I took it into the shop and the tech said it was dead. RIP.

I was reading about updating with the newer SEAS tweeter.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the updated tweeter?

There are usually a few used versions of the original A25 tweeters on FleaBay at reasonable prices because they are not scarce by any means. Look under both Vintage Dynaco and SEAS Tweeters and just be sure to get the exact same model number if you want to maintain the original sound presentation. Sometimes newer is not always better and especially with a hugely popular (thanks to Consumer Reports magazine) and iconic speaker like the A25.
 
I would stay away from that shop. ^

+1 on getting an original tweeter from eBay and cleaning the controls on the back. Might as well recap while you’re in there. If the tech already pried the woofer out then the hard part is already done.

When I recapped mine I think they had a 5uf cap that I replaced with a 4.7uf

edit: and of course do the same to the other speaker.

RIP-OFF!
Look on fleabay for a correct tweeter as noted, and check the pots for corrosion as Wayner states.
I'd still find an extra tweeter or two as backups just in case.

Too bad I gave away an extra H087 tweeter to some smuck that didn't even thank me (also shipped for free), but what the hell. I think that the H087 is a good tweeter, but the 27TFFC is waaaaay better and the OP is going to pay around $45 for a used H087, which is the price for the new SEAS. I'd get 2 new ones, clean the rotary and get a couple of quality 5uf (ok, 4.7uf) caps and call it a day. The end result will be an awesome speaker that you will have another $120 put into it.
 
I have a source for three. Will any of these work. If so I’ll inquire about them.

I had a tweeter go out on a mini Advent as well as one on a Polk speaker. Both were domes and both were five or six inch woofers. I just went to Newark electronics and bought four 1" dome tweeters for around $5 each. I had to do some mods to get them to fit, but not much. It was a crap shoot, but they are much better tweeters than either speaker originally used and they sound fantastic.

I think it was a smart move to go with a known good tweeter upgrade for this speaker. If you used some random tweeter, you never know what the result will be.

Some people like the Dayton caps and others say they’re too bright. It depends largely on the speaker it’s used in. The Dynacos are not a very HF forward speaker anyways and they might be fine.

My experience is they were too bright on horns, but ok on cone tweeters. The domes might be somewhere in between
