Hey All!
After reading numerous threads about the best ways to clean Dynaco A25 Grille Cloths, I wanted to take a stab and post my results.
I tried a few methods and came up with with some techniques along the way. My method includes bleach, so attempt at your discretion. Bleach can weaken fabric, and final results may be different from the original factory color. Maintaining the Original color wasn't as important to me as having a clean grille.
As many of us know, when cleaning the original grilles, a black residue leaches from the frame on to the cloth, if we work quickly it will not be permanent.
I wanted to clean with things that I already had at home, I didn't want to wait on cleaning supplies from Amazon, so most people should have access to the following cleaning supplies at home, or very easy to attain locally.
Now to cleaning!
We will need:
-Spray bottle 1/4 bleach 3/4 water
-Foaming upholstery cleaner
-Soft bristle brush
-Hairdryer
-Old plastic cards (Spray cards with bleach before cleaning to ensure no dye will leach on to your grille cloth.)
Do ONE grille at a time.
Work in a well ventilated area, the bathtub or outside:
1. Spray with foaming upholstery cleaner, let set for 5 min, scrub gently
2. Rinse with cool water
3. Blot as much of the frame as possible with a white shop towel or paper towels
4. In a spray bottle, 1/4 bleach 3/4 water, spray the entire grille cloth. Scrub gently, let sit for 5 min
5. Rinse with cool water
--Repeat as needed to get desired cleanliness and desired lightness--
By now you should see a huge improvement, but the edges will still be a bit brown and have some black residue. To prevent the inky substance from getting to your grille cloth, we will need to wedge an old credit card, subway card etc., between the frame and the cloth.
----CARD METHOD----
If you want to save time, you can use two cards on opposed sides of the frame and work your way around.
6. On the backside slip a card between the frame and cloth.
7. On the front side, spray bleach mixture to the area of the card.
8. Quickly blot with a towel.
9. Dry the effected area with a hair dryer and continue to blot.
10. Move the card down the frame and repeat until the entire perimeter is cleaned and dry.
As you work your way around you will start to notice that the center of the grille is a little darker in comparison to the edges.
To fix:
11. Spray the center again with bleach, blot
12. Dry center with hair dryer.
--Repeat until the grille cloth is a uniform color--
13. Repeat all steps with next grille.
Last remarks, there are many ways to do the same thing. This is something that worked for me. I am sure I will continue to clean these things until the cows come home.
The attached photos are my results and cleaning supplies. I did my best to take the photos under the same lighting conditions I also white balanced for the most accurate comparison.
