Huh, I've usually always liked them to the outside when mirrored.
Even when laying speakers on there sides they sounded better with the tweeters to the outside. Maybe it depends on the room and it's size?
Most articles I've read recommend tweeters inside. But ISTM that if you can't separate the speakers by that much, you might get audibly improved separation with them on the outside.
They'll be a bit better time-aligned, if the tweeters are on the outside- unless you toe them in a LOT (i.e, toed in farther than facing directly at you).
