The original cap is 5uf and, within a 10% tolerance, 5.1uf and will NOT make a difference. 5.1 is closer to the original than the 4.7 anyway. Mine have been in there for 2+ years with no problems. If your ears can hear a .4uf swing in a cap, then you are a better man than us in here. But, go with what works for you.
Bypass caps add in their own oddities and are personal preference. Most times they were used in conjunction with cheaper electrolytics to add in some sonic characteristics of the poly cap. Used with good quality poly caps, though, is a waste. I've always removed them and not used them again with better caps. Just my $.02 and YMMV.
Appreciate your thoughts on my comment but I actually CAN hear a difference as I'm sure many people could if they have experience rolling their own speakers and have actually tried different cap combinations to obtain the sound they were looking for. The fact that yours have been in your speakers for more than 2 years and have caused you no problems means absolutely nothing. I can put a 6uf cap in there for that matter and it will cause no problems... Is it right? No.
You refer to me being a better man than "us" if I can hear the difference.... I'm so happy you can speak for everyone else here and "their" ability to hear things.
Have you ever tried the difference yourself? I'm sure you would hear the difference between 5.1 and 4.7 ... Which by the way happens to be the original value in two different pairs of A-25's that I've opened up. None of them were previously modified either. Maybe yours were
5uf, I'm not doubting that. The fact that it is a simple first order crossover with one cap on the tweeter will allow you to hear the changes in sound when one increases the value of the capacitor. (And yes, by as little as .4uf) 10% tolerance is "accepted" simply because it is too costly or counter productive for speaker manufacturers to keep it under that. This is one of the reasons you pay more for speakers that have matched components with tolerances of no more than 1%. Many of the uber expensive speakers match their components this way. Why would they do that?
If you bother to listen critically enough, you can and will hear the difference. Just don't rely on common assumption that a 10% tolerance means nothing. In a lowpass crossover network... Maybe. but in the most important part of the crossover where the woofer crosses to the tweeter... It makes a difference. Whether you care or not is a different story.
It's easy enough for the OP to try it if he hasn't given up already.
