Dynaco A25 - torn woofer

A cascade of events involving one or more cats, a little Realistic amp, and the speaker it was perched on, resulted in a torn woofer on a Dynaco A25.

I'm looking for a replacement, but it also occurred to me that I might be able to repair it. Any advice on how to do it? Some secret brew of glue and tissue paper? The internet is full of advice, but I trust yours. Thanks!

Does the woofer still work? Albeit with distortion. If it doesn't, you'll prolly need a recone kit. If it's still available. If you recone one and not the other, the stereo may not be well balanced.

If it still works, you can try getting some dark-colored construction paper and grinding it up into smaller pieces. Then, mix it with some thinned Elmer's Glue All and apply the paste as lightly and evenly as possible to the cleaned-up damaged areas. Thin the glue 1:1 with water.

If all else fails, Parts Express stocks new replacement woofers.

You can perform a cone repair by cutting a proper sized “patch” of paper towel, then apply “watered down” wood glue to the cone and apply the “patch" to the cone. Remove any excess glue from the repair and allow to dry.

It not only works, but it sounds fine, at least at low and moderate volumes. I didn't notice the damage until this afternoon when I was about to remove the woofer to recap it. I was able to recover most of the missing chunks of the cone.

I'd fix that with Mr. Boochies mix and maybe a little coffee filter support, maybe. Bet you won't hear the difference between the two speakers.

Crank it and see what happens. If it still sounds okay, I wouldn't worry about it. But keep the grilles on — to avoid kitty's revenge!

They're supposed to go to my daughter as part of her wedding gift, so as long as the sound is close enough she'll probably never even take the grills off. I'm letting her take her pick of several sets of speakers, including TF500's, EV Interface 2's, and a few others, but she'll want the A25's just based on looks alone.

If the speaker plays above 86dBA without obvious distortion, it's prolly okay for your daughter. If not, you can swap out woofers later.

You may need to trim and clean some of the torn bits (to keep the damaged edges from vibrating on the cone). Maybe just a little Elmer's around the edges to keep them from vibrating. A little in those cracks to seal them from opening up. Use as little Elmer's as possible (I like to dilute it).

The grills were only off because I bought new fabric to replace the damn things!!! I should have just left the ones with 50 years of tar and nicotine on there. The color was actually pretty nice, if a bit grungy.

Yeah. For future reference, I like to keep the original grilles if possible. Simple Green (or a similar mild cleaner), a little elbow grease, and sunlight usually get rid of much of that tar stain and smell from old smokes.

Just as I was about to do the repair I made the mistake of leaving the room for half a minute with the speaker on the table. My cat, living up to his name (Genghis Khan), took the opportunity to jump on the woofer and finish what he started. Paw went right through to the voice coil.

OH MAN! He knew you were working on the speaker and got jealous. Cats are like that (they're just like some human females)! ;)

You are going to need a re-cone or new speakers. You prolly need two, as the imbalance between the right and left may be very noticeable.

Yeah it sucks, but thanks. Another user has a spare set of all 4 drivers so hopefully that works out. The modern replacements are half off on PE, but I'd prefer to keep them original if possible. They sounded great before they got F'd.

That's cool. I never work on anything not related to pets or my better half, in front of them. All is cool if it pertains to them — but if it doesn't and is strictly your stuff... be careful!
