Dynaco A35-XL?

A friend of mine recently picked up 2 sets of what he believes are a35 (XL)'s.

I've read plenty about the a25's, a25xl's and a35's... but I can't seem to find anything on the a35XL. :worried:

I assume the differences are similar between the standard and the XL in both the a25 and a35 range.

Anyone know the specifics?

Thanks guys, I don't even see a listing for an A35xl. Perhaps he's mistaken and they're just plain a35's or a40xl's
 
Sorry for the multiple posts, I was struggling a bit posting from my phone last night.

Info on these is quite scarce, anyone have an experience with them? I didn't get a chance to give them a proper audition unfortunately but from the little I heard they sounded quite nice.
 
Well, this speaker is not the original A30. It's a 80s version of the A30 with a midrange unit and it doesn't appear to be a periodic enclosure either. I've seen Dynaco A25s like this as well. I think they were made in the US, not sure of the source of the drivers (maybe SEAS) but they are not the speakers that are sought after. After another look, the tweeter does look like the ones from an A25XL (I have 2 pair), without the mesh screen in front, and that speaker was made by SEAS. The woofer does not look familiar nor the mid.

Thanks for the info, now I'm even more intrigued. When I get a chance to go back over and audition them I'll post my findings. If my friend allows it I'll try and get some pics of the drivers removed.
 
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its a bad speaker, its just the later version of the A30 and not made by SEAS. When these were made, it was a crucial time for Dynaco. I think at this time, they were bought by another company and things were changing pretty fast.

If you like the way they sound, what the hell. Just keep in mind that if you do want to get rid of them, these are not the speakers that most people want. They want the earlier version with the periodic tuned enclosure like the one shown in Gregg Dunns's Dynaco website.

I have those speakers....I purchased mine brand new in 1978, Dynaco A30 xl......plaque on the back says Blackwood, New Jersey...........I pulled my bass speakers one day out of curiosity and there is a number on them but they do not say Seas......the mid range and tweeter didn't want to come out easily so I left them alone......mine still sound great....there seems to be very little info on these........mine certainly aren't an 80's replacement yet were made in Jersey..........so....I wonder if these are sought after......
 
These speakers were built pretty much in the declining years of Dynaco. Because they do not have the Seas or Scanspeak drivers in them, they are not sought after as the other Dynaco speakers are (A25, A25XL, A35 etc). However, if you enjoy them, what the hell. They look nice.

Those look very similar to another Panor era Dynaco speaker, the A250. The only difference I can see (from the front, anyway) is yours has the Seas tweeter and the A250 tweeter was made by Polydax. As best I can recall the woofer in the A250 was made by Becker, and the midrange was made in Japan. In any event I think the mid and woofer are the same in your A30XLs. These aren't bad drivers at all, even if they're not Seas or ScanSpeak. Maybe a step down in quality (and cost), but not a huge step. In short, the A250 is still a nice sounding speaker. I would expect the A30XL to sound no worse, and possibly even better.

Thanks, your right on the money about the mid range, I went down and popped it out after posting. The shape is like a oil filter on a car painted black with Japan stamped on the back and no other markings. The tweeter still didn't want to come out so i can't identify it. The woofer ,as stated above, is heavy, has a good sized magnet but just numbers. Absolutely no name stamped anywhere.....
Eh,...I'll keep 'em....
 
There are some mid range vintage seas drivers I can get. Would I be messing anything up by replacing my current mids with these seas?.......in no way can I mess with crossover issues, that's way beyond me....
