Dynaco Mystery Speakers Investigation

I picked these speakers up from a thrift store, and they need some work but the origins seem very confusing. I have not been able to find the same model speakers anywhere. I understand that Dynaco is a popular brand, and I see a lot of talk about A-10s and A-25s etc.

But these are labeled as A-15 .. ?

They sound pretty good when I tested them, the foam around each woofer is rotted, so they must be old.

Could it be remakes / rare / what's the story?

Also, what would be a good replacement driver for these?

Totally new to vintage speakers (this forum, and audio in general) so I don't know much about what to look for / speaker history. I'm hoping to get some leads / any info.

I took out one of the woofers so you can see it, (its made in taiwan?! hah)

Here you go:

"Starting approximately in 1981, Panor Corporation apparently released a new series of Dynaco equipment through their Hauppauge NY offices. It is not clear how this meshed with the Dynaco brand owned by Stereo Cost Cutters / Sound Values, but a series of Dynaco speakers titled the A-150, A-250, and A-350 were sold in the US during the 1980s. They were manufactured in suburban Boston, near the Advent factory, and seem to have been replaced by a new series including the A15, A38, and "Amazing Bass" subwoofer during the 1990s. If info on the LMS speakers is scarce, info on these units is practically nonexistent save for fragmented ads and review snippets which have been contributed by visitors to the site. An attempt to add to the knowledge base for these speakers will also be made."

So your speakers are known, but specific documentation and history has not been established.

Repair: You can easily order an approximate replacement foam surround and repair your current woofers. The best source seems to be Rick Cobb. Search the forum and you will find his contact information. He sells on ebay.

Sweet thanks for the contact and info. It does sound about right, like some kind of refresh of the old with globalized manufacturing - following the Panor Corp. lead you shared, I found this on Bloomberg:

Panor Corp. distributes sell audio-visual and electronic products under the Dynaco trademark, mostly rebadged Asian audio and home theatre equipment. The company was formerly known as the Pan Orient Corporation. Panor Corp. was founded in 1980 and is based in Hauppauge, New York

Seems to line up with the fact that the woofers are from taiwan. They still sound great - though I guess I don't have an older Dynaco to compare with.

Going to check what other labels these speakers might have gone under... oh the 80s...
