Dynaco PAS pre amp. Worth it ?

Chap

Electrochap
I know, I'll put pictures later on today or tomorrow.

Somebody proposed me a Dynaco PAS pre-amp, not a PAS 2, not a PAS 3 a PAS. I guess it is the first model. It is in good shape, looks very simple. contained only 4 12AX7 ( that were carefully removed by seller as they were Telefunken ).

I can buy it for $150. Does it worth it ? I sure can get it back to mint condition or so.

I have some 12AX7 Telefunken available to put in it. I will replace all capacitors in it.

I have a choice of using a Fisher 202T tuner pre-amp ( I also paid $150 ) or this PAS pre amp with a tuner I'll find later. What should I pick ? ( I did put pictures of the 202T, just search in this tube forum ).

I'll use a ST70 for power amp that I need to rebuilt. BTW, is there a thread about rebuilding a ST70 on AK ?

The pas is virtually identical to the pas 2 and 3. A good deal if you like that sort of thing. The Fisher would be a much better investment. It is probably worth $500 or more.

I have owned and modified a number of PAS preamps. The $150 price is much higher than I spent on them. I also agree the Fisher is much more collectible. Probably much more sophisticated as well.

Yap, $150 is a bit too much, without the tubes is even worse. I won't keep it and work on the Fisher more.

BTW again, who in AK could guide me in getting this nice "The Fisher" aligned correctly? I'm a technician in telecom. I've started working on audio gear 3 years ago. I can repair most of the problems but still don't know how to align a tuner, and I don't know much about tubes...

I've already replaced most of the 40 mf filter caps in this Fisher. Looks like all others are ceramic and don't need to be replaced. Am I right ? What else ?

On the ceramic caps, it depends. Noise filters, like on the AC side don't need replacement. Ceramics that are cracked or otherwise damaged need replacement.

I have seen a lot of caps at Terry DeWicks' house that he has removed from Mac equipment he refurbishes. They looked like they have been heat damaged. They were flaky as well as cracked on the ends.

150 would be fine if it had the Teles in it, but with no tubes, you aren't buying much more than a cabinet and a undersized power TX:thumbsdn:
