Dynaco PAT-4 preamplifier with phono input

70WR

Super Member
Seller asking $150.
Good for TT? (JVC QL-Y7)
Good buy?

Only a slight, very slight small scuff mark below the volume knob, didn't try to clean. Inside and brown cover very clean.

I'm using TT & Tuner piped to Yammy C-85 > tube amp on one of my systems, and thinking about this. Just thinking so far, no contact yet.

Thanks for any opinions

in short no .the pat4's dont have a good reputation and $150 is way too much for them.theres alot more at that price point that will do the job better.

Yeah, if thats all original, half the price would be appropriate. If however, its been rebuilt within the last couple of years, or better yet done over with upgrades,it could be well worth a listen.

To be blunt: the worst preamp I've ever heard. Grew up with one, I remember it sounded kind of bad. Bought a different one 4 years ago for the memories- sent my memories back to my dad. Who also said it was a memory not worth remembering.

Is there something you feel you are lacking in the C-85? I had a C-80 and it was much much better than a Pat-4, and it had a very good phono stage. There are better preamps than the C-85 but IMHO, the Pat-4 is far from being one of them.

Thanks everyone. Since everyone didn't say to run and jump on it, then I'm going to pass. I had no idea on value, and the seller didn't say much more.

It was the first time I seen a PAT-4 on local CL. So either they don't come around every day, folks usually hang on to them, or whatever, but I had to ask.

I like my C-85, and I have a C-60 being used in another system.
I don't have many preamp's and don't know a lot about the better ones or ones to stay away from.
I do have a couple Carver CT-24 Tuner/Preamp and I'm not thrilled with those.
My C-85 is running my TT (JVC QL-Y7) and piped to a tube amp. I just thought if the PAT-4 could hold its own, maybe sitting besides my tube amp would be something to try.

Other than that, no problems with my C-85 & C-60, just don't have much to compare and happen to see the PAT-4 pop up on CL.

add - and if it was a good deal and decent pre, than I would have hate to miss out waiting to long and it be gone.

Thanks

I have a PAT4 that I use with my Agcon GA2 SS amp. I use it for all day listening instead of my tubes. I use it primarily for tuner, MP3 and CD. $150 is steep. I upgraded the power supply in mine and replaced the volume control. It suits my needs fine. But I agree for $150 there are better choices out there.

I'd spend the $150 on one of your Yammy preamps and get it upgraded if not done so already. Either of your preamps are and will be much better than the Pat4, IMHO. Oh and the re-sale on the Yammys will be there if you find something better down the road.

Cheers,

Bob

25$ - but i wouldn't even buy for that a Pat 4 anymore since I had one years ago. Awful.

The PAT-4 is not a particularly good preamp (I've had one) and for $150 you can do much better.

One of the two worst preamps I ever heard. Only good for getting the needed parts for a Frank VanAlsine modded preamp.
