Dynaco ST-70

Danimal

Just a man...
I am looking at picking one of these units up this weekend. The seller states that there is a new matched quad of Electro-Harmonix el34. Are these decent tubes and what can I expect? I am a newb when it comes to tubes so I am sure I will be asking plenty of questions and doing many a search.

Wow, how much is he (she) asking? I've seen fully refurbed units sell for 500 and up. I've never heard one, but I've heard many tube amps.. I think you're in for a pleasant surprise when it comes to the "warmth" that everyone talks about..

I hate them meanwhile... Had several quads, and now a bunch of lose tubes, the leftover relatives from the died :)

The EH 6CA7 I have a good sextett, I picked together out of 3 Quads. Those six seem to be relative reliable.

I am not a great fan of russian tubes.

After the experiences I made with EH, JJ and friends I guess I am sure to go much better with (N)OS tubes. Much less trouble, except finding them.

He is asking $375.00 and I just got off the phone with him. He said he will hold it for me until Sunday. Pretty excited. I will be pushing me newly acquired Dynaco A-25 speakers. The gentleman has a pair of those he is hooking up so I can really hear what she has to offer as well as I am bringing up my SAE Mark NINE pre to run it all through.

cool, good price, if really refurbed.

use the EH as long they survive...

keep your eyes open for:

Philips ECG / Sylvania 6CA7
Philips brown base double D getter el34 $$$ :tears:
East german el34
Ei 6CA7
Tesla OO Getter el34

It's nice to have a new quad, but I don't think Electro-Harmonex tubes are anything to get excited about. I haven't personnally used them, and tubes can get expensive so it could be a good way to get your feet wet.

Sounds like a very good price. Besides, they are fun, easy to work on, lots of available mods.

It's a really nice amp. Local pickup beats paying for shipping and risking damage. I agree with Danimal as far as the price goes, as long as it was recapped. Even if it isn't, the parts are cheap enough if you're handy (but make it a negotiation point).

I have used Electro Harmonix 7591's and 6L6's and had only one problem, a tube was arcing, after only an hour. Antique Electronics replaced the matched pair and all was well. That said, the new Chinese tubes seem good and are cheaper so I have been buying those.

For $375 I'd make whatever effort I could to pick it up ASAP. A lot can happen between now and Sunday. Someone else will call him, pressure him to take $400 right now, be at his doorstep, and he'll succumb. AK is full of posts documenting disappointments resulting from sellers' broken promises to hold an item. And you can't really blame the seller... how does he know you won't flake out on him and he'll be stuck trying to sell the unit for another week or two?

Just a note, a matched quad is meaningless, you only need matched pairs for each side. Each channel has a bias pot, but not one for each tube. Having the same types of tubes on the left and right are a very good idea. But the four need not be matched.

If a quad is only twice the price of a pair, I see it, but stating that the quad is matched is a moot point.

You will like this amp!

You wouldn't have to worry about mixing up the pairs.

I agree, go get it!:thmbsp:

I wish I could just "go get it". As usual with me, this deal is contingent on me selling my DQ-28's. The guy that was supposed to pick them up tomorrow flaked out.

Just my luck....
