Hello everyone,

I need some opinions on some old Dynaco Stuff. I have the option to buy a Dynaco package consisting of a Stereo 70 Amp, PAS-2 Preamp, and FM-1 Tuner for $650 in unknown condition. They have been in storage for years and the guy said they worked before putting them there. I am fairly new to vintage audio and very new to Tube stuff, I have some experience with solid state receivers. I know the ebay prices are high on the amp and pre amp, but what kind of money would I have to put into it to get it back into good working order? I am a very handy guy, but I don't know that I would want to mess with these myself, being a sizable investment.

That's a very good deal, but they will probably need some restoration--replacing the can capacitors and possibly coupling caps, the selenium rectifiers, and some other components. This is not difficult to do and isn't terribly expensive. You could probably get them running nicely for $200. At the very least, you will need a variac to ramp up the voltage slowly over a period of days and reform the can capacitors in order to see what kind of general condition they're in. Under no circumstances would I plug them in right out of storage.

Look carefully to make sure they are unmolested. Look for extra components and odd things inside.
If they are modified, look for documentation , lacking proper documentation is a good argument to slice down the price.

Get the Dynaco manuals, they are available at several places, google will help here.

When starting them , look for damages, examine power cords for damages, replace if damaged. Start them
up with care, a variac or series lamp is of great value.
 
Alrighty, thanks for the replies, I just had a good conversation with the guy and committed to buying them. I will be picking them up Wednesday. I was just at menards and bought supplies to whip up a dim bulb tester because I am planning on working on a few things before I open up the Dynacos. I have a Knight KG-250 I just picked up for cheap to get working and I have a few receivers needing capacitors replaced - Allied 395 (Pioneer SX-1000TW), Pioneer SX-990 which has some problems, among others. I really want to learn about this stuff, I am a mechanical engineering student and really enjoy vintage audio.
 
One thing I always look at are the tubes; if that ST-70 has OEM tubes or Mullards in it, they alone are likely worth your purchase price. If it's full of newer Russian or Chinese tubes, the value of the bundle drops considerably. That being said, for the price mentioned, tubeless units would a decent deal.
